Here is a picture taken on trail cam at a stand in northern Alberta.
Nice black bear, worried wolf wet weather.

About 45 years ago, I saw a fight between a lynx and a smallish black bear. The fight took them out of my sight after a bit, but I really couldn't tell you who the winner was. that lynx was emitting some pretty eerie sounds.

The wolf will cave in. I have personally seen one eagle keep three wolves from the meat they were after. Not saying they are cowards, but they just won't fight to keep something.
They won't defend their life against a man when they are wounded, either. I have had encounters with several, different wolves, one wolf at each occasion and none made any attempt, whatsoever, to defend themselves. I have walked up on a wolf I had wounded with a rifle. The wolf was standing on all fours, so not terribly badly wounded. I walked up to feet from him, trying to get a spot where I could shoot him again in the body with a heavy calibre, so as not to harm the skull.
He made absolutely no attempt to attack, or harm me, from six feet away.
Thus, all this bull sh$t you hear on here from people with no knowledge of wolves, and a hell bound opinion that a wounded wolf will get him/her, if they don't kill it and of course they need a large caliber gun, at least a twelve gauge with slugs or buck shot, is basically just bullsh$t.

One on one, a decent size bear will beat a wolf, no problem. Get a pack together and that changes completely, especially if a wolf pack is trying to cut cubs away from their mother bear- grizzly or black bear. Wolverines have a reputation for being vicious and standing their ground, yet I witnessed a small pack of wolves chase one up a tree and hold him there for some time, and probably would have continued had I not intervened by wandering into the battle.

If you look closely you will see that wolf is suffering from mange - no guard hairs on the shoulder area. Was probably desperate and hungry. Interesting picture.
