Black gun advice

I'm making a list of future dream purchases and having trouble deciding on what I want for a NR black rifle, preferably below 1,000$ but am willing to entertain saving for something suitably shiny. Been looking at ruger mini 14's (or 30's)
Or the norinco M14. Anyone have any input?
 
Depends what you want to do.. the mini 14 is great but you will have to stretch the budget to buy new. M14's can be had for much less but IMO need modifications to be anywhere new as accurate as a stock mini.
 
Unfortunately NR black rifles are kept artificially high here because the reasonably priced competition is restricted. spending anything under $2500 new or $1800 used is almost definitely going to leave wishing you had saved longer.

Look towards used Tavor's or XCR-L's in the $1800-$2200 range.

this is totally true, the market is artificially propped up by law, not quality or competition.

also don't forget the kel tec Su-16, certainly not the highest quality, most accurate, or prettiest but its under $1000 12-13 hundred if you want extras on it.. plus you can use standard usgi magazines
 
Depends on what you expect out of the gun. I started with a SU 16 x2. Sold both at a loss, next was an XCR-L keymod ,sold at a loss. Then a Jard-48. I couldn't get comfortable with a gun that shoots 1 1/2 MOA off the bench, can only imagine what it would do at 300 yards freehand. For that kinda money you'd think it would at least be MOA. I'm now waiting on an MV, I have 6 months to pay for it and I hope it's worth it. I'd be very happy if can do Sub MOA consistently. For me , the accuracy is important in a NR black rifle. If they can make a sub$2000 AR that shoots SUB MOA , you'd think they could at least make a MOA NR black rifle . I guess my point is, if you don't care about the accuracy, get a SU 16 for $900,throw a pistol grip and forend on for another $300 and it'll do the same thing that the $2800 XCR and Tavor will do. But if accuracy is important, don't buy any of these as you'll be sadly disappointed and lose money when you dump it on the EE:) The ACR is supposed to be accurate and it's under $3000 but I personally think it's to heavy for that type of gun.If the government would only wake the Fack up and make the AR NR, it would be a win win situation for everybody. ( tons of tax money for them and a excellent hunting rifle for us.
 
Under a thousand? I second the VZ 58. Basically a product-improved SKS. They shoot either 223 or 7.62x39, are very accurate, have great triggers, and there is lots of accessories to be had for them as well. With that being said, I would save up and get a used Robinson Arms XCR off the EE... you would never look back.

There is some good advice in the preceding posts. On the two rifles mentioned, be aware of what kind of accuracy you're buying with a Ruger Mini-14 or 30 and make sure you'll be happy that; with the M305, buying this rifle because of the up-front cost is false economy since feeding the beast will quickly consume any savings you think you've earned ($1.50 per shot).
 
Thanks for all the input everyone, I had Been looking at ATR's as well as tavor's and XCR's, might have to hold off on a NR black rifle until I do some more saving and reading and then can pull the trigger on a pricier model after shopping around.
