Hi, I'm looking for a bullet recommendation. I want to load B.P. into my .45 long colt revolver.

I'm considering the bullet barns 250gr. RNFP or the Cactus Plains 250gr. RNFP both of course are hard cast lead bullets.

What I don't know about the bullet I need is lubrication. I have read that when using B.P. lots of lube is required, so I'm guessing more channels in the bullet the better.

The Bullet barn bullets are about double the price but I know they come pre-lubed ( is the lube appropriate for what I want, I don't know?) I can't find any details on the cactus plains ones.

I would also take recommendations for what lubricant I should use.

Thanks in advance

Nic

I shoot the Cactus Plains ones in my .45 LC's and I can tell you they're pre-lubed as well. Is the lube suitable for BP? Dunno. Hopefully others will chime in here with knowledge.

For cast BP bullets, you should use the softest avail., either pure lead or 30-1, bullets should have generous lube grooves filled with BLACK POWDER LUBE. BP lube is dif. from reg. bullet lube as it should contain no petroleum products, it is used to control fouling and makes cleanup much easier.

In addition to echoing what Ben said, I use a 50-50 mixture of bear grease and bees wax. I suspect any source of animal fat/grease would work. If you are using pre cast bullets that have already been lubed with a waxy lube, put them in hot or boiling water and the lube will float off then when the slugs are cool, just lube with your fingers before loading

Good comments, Ben and Mooncoon.

What i used to do was removing the hard lube that came on my Wolff bullet by putting them in the oven at the lowest temperature setting. Just put some old newspapers in an old pan (that you don't intend to use for cooking anymore), put the bullet standing on the paper and wait 'till the lube is gone. Then, you can "pan-lube" your bullet with a mix of crisco and beeswax (google "panlube", you will find lots of website.

Now, i prefer softer bullet when i shoot black powder so i cast my own using almost pure lead and a "BigLube" mold: those bullet carry more lube than needed for a revolver, but i also use them in a rifle so the extra lube is useful.

Have fun!

Or you can just buy the proper bullets(soft) with the proper lube, most of those extremely hard bullets have too small a lube groove as well.

I agree with ben on this one.
It would be much easier to get bullets that are designed and lubed for black powder.
Do you offer them ben?
I know several people that are looking just for that but its not easy to find commercially available cast bullets for black powder.

Yeah It's definetly not easy to find this sort of stuff. Most gun shop guys look at you like you have two heads when you ask about black powder cartridges. I figured I would get in casting my own bullets but not just yet, I've got a lot of other projects on the go and don't want to play with something new just yet.

If someone knows of some commercialy produced bullets for B.P. I would really like to hear about it. I'm living in the Edmonton area now.

I supply Bp bullets to folks, from heeled bullets for the .41 through all pistol calibers, any rifle cals. that you can think of(that use BP), as well as the long BPCR bullets that some on here use for competition. I don't push it much because I get weary of trying to explain to folks why they don't want a BHN 25 bullet with hard lube for 99% of their shooting. You can check with the CAS guys from here in Sk. or Alta in regards to quality.

There is a bit of confusion regarding M.T. Chambers' Supply and the supply of bullets to folks, the anticipated move to the USA has been delayed, so I am still able to supply folks with quality HANDMADE to their specs, bullets. Avail. in diff. sizes, alloys, BP or smokeless, and specializing in orig. designs, famous designs, old time bullets at old time prices(to some extent).....Ben

Do you still supply 0.45 bullets for black powder? I would like to try some black powder loads in my revolver. Also, do you also supply lead balls in 0.58?
Thanks
