I showed up one day at my local range and the range was closed for a cannon shoot. more of a spectacle than anything but I'm still kind of curious about building one myself just for giggles. something in the subcompact size that can easily fit in the bed of a truck and portable. should I start with a BP rifle or just go all in? looking for personal experiences and advice, thanks.

A mortar is compact and has limited range (a safety consideration). Years ago I made one with a tomato paste can sized bore. It would loft a can projectile about 180 yards with a flight time of about 8 seconds. The can could be seen in flight, and if a pen gun flare was embedded in the filling, the projectile became a tracer. Used about 80gr of FFg. Easy to transport, economical to shoot, no need for a backstop if used on open ground.

Barsik - Your range will be closed to rifles again next weekend. Come out and enjoy some smoke and thunder!!
