Anyone have one of better yet anyone build one and can steer me in the right direction as far as some plans or safe guidelines to follow
I'm thinking about a naval style that can fire golfballs I'm thinking about 20-24" long with a bore size of 1.720" the boar size is the only thing so far I'm sure of. I'm planing on using 4-4.5" solid 4140 steel
Any tips would be a huge help I plan to use it and don't want to build a pipe bomb
Thanks
Red

Check out www.go2gbo.com scroll down to blackpowder cannons and mortars....read..lots of info....build safe..agree you only need 1018 steel. But learn the proper thickness required....Rule of thumb is that the area over the chamber wall should be at least as thick as the bore of the chamber. ie if powder chamber is one inch the diameter at that point has to be a min of three inches. Cheers Frank

Thanks for the tips What should I be using for charges. I don't really need to fire a golfball into the next county but want a good result
Also wondering what barrel length I should be thinking about as I said I'm going naval style
Thanks

Don't worry about the "charges" you can fire a golf ball for 200 yards with 100 grain of black powder, or less. Shooting golf balls from a cannon becomes boring, they literally fly in all directions when they exit the barrel. It is impossible to aim, or hit anything with a golf ball.
Here is a picture of my 1" bore cannon with a removable aiming device, perhaps it will give you some inspiration on your build, I proof tested this thing with 850 grains of powder (Pyrodex) and normally fire it with 300 grains of powder and with a ball, or 500 grains of powder and a wad of toilet paper on top, (for the big boom). I can keep the balls in a 24" circle at 100 yards.
