Seems odd to just use them for signaling.

I think on occasion they were used in dense fog and close to a rocky shore, to create an echo as an indication of how far away they were. Also again as applies to foggy conditions and risk of approaching boats, used to warn others that a boat was in the area

Ok so if any projectiles used then would there be recoil from any type of projectile leaving muzzle. That's what I'm asking here.
