Black Power loading a 1851 Navy Revolver

Most .44s of my acquaintance like something between 20 and 25gr of 3Fg for accuracy. Stoking it up to punch paper is counter-productive, to say the least, since I've never heard of anybody being gored by an angry target beicause the shot failed to work properly.

I recommend watching Mike Beliveau [duellist1954] or capandball on Youtube - even Hickock45. All have recommended the same area of load for the .44 cal ball. Hungarian Gyula Maszerós, who shoots a Colt Walker in competition and is a national champion in open-frame style target shooting, loads his massive pistol with just 30gr and tops it off with semolina - the usual load for the Walker is at least 45 - 50gr.

I think you'll find that the Italian makers are erring on the lower side of caution to prevent our Southern Cousins just down there from stoking them up to the gun'ls and causing some kind of distress to themselves. Oddly enough, you can fill the chambers of any modern replica with as much as you can get in, with a ball, and it's still safe, very sparky, but safe... again down there, a pal mine in NC shoots hogs with his Ruger Old Army. His load is 40gr of 3Fg under a conical, and the range is usually around 10 yards or so. He used to do it with a Harper's Ferry flintlock, but gave that up as a mite too risky after he had a misfire. The hog won that day and pal Dave got just under 400 stitches and a permanent limp.
