Black Rifle For Hunting

Try to borrow a black rifle and use it a bit, ideally for hunting, before you actually buy one for hunting.

Pistol-gripped rifles are, for me, very comfortable for shooting...but, again IMHO, they suck for carrying. Since hunting normally consists of about 99.999% carrying and 0.001% hunting...well, you see where I'm going with this.

This past fall I used a Dominion Arms/Norinco M14 clone for my deer rifle. It worked, as in "the deer fell over dead". But it was the most awkward, clunky, rattly, overweight and generally PITA rifle I've ever fielded for hunting...and it's not even a pistol grip! Try before you buy! :)

When hunting larger game i was taught to use a minimum of 270 caliber or greater.
Alberta laws dictate that no hunting of game unless it is larger than a 230 caliber so that rules out a 5.56 or 223 exception coyotes
308 has been a reliable round since 1940s i believe
What ever you decide good luck

308 Winchester was invented in 1952, for what it's worth. Before that, people used .300 Savage - almost the same thing.

Depends on what you hunt and type of hunting.

I have use an xcr in 6.8spc for deer few seasons ago but after the first day I took my Tikka T3 lite instead ( always bring a spare rifle when I am several hours away from hunt on any hunting trip ).

I have thought about pretty much all the options on black rifle (NR of course) for hunting and found most if not all are too heavy like many other said.

I finally settled on a Mini 14 in 6.8spc they only comes in stainless and was made between I believe 2008 to 2011 and if you choose your shot carefully and with the right bullet you should be able to drop deer and black bear under 200 yards and anything larger might not be ethical it will still do it but there will be better option out there.

Of course some will argue it is legal to use 22 centerfire (223) to hunt big game in some province but it is up to you to decide whether it will be adequate / ethical or not.

The 6.8spc is more popular South of the border order used almost exclusively on AR platform for hunting

A good friend of mine hunts with his XCR-M (308win). I am considering this option for next year or Troy PAR in 308 if I can try one until I'm ready to buy

I am putting on my Fudd hat here but hunting is one of the most noble pass times a man can enjoy, just the act of participating connects you with your inner instincts and ancestry at the same time, do it right and carry a tool designed for the task. War is pretty much the opposite to hunting, modern guns designed for that pursuit work and if you choose to use one that's up to you but they are not great for the task.
For the same money as a modern nr black rifle you can get a higher end rifle and scope that you could be proud to pass down.
No disrespect for people that choose black rifles for hunting.

I'll date myself a bit here . I used an Aussie L1A1 for Deer and Moose , back before the earths crust cooled , and an AR15 for Coyotes . As much as I liked my FAL , I still have one , it did get old after a while . The AR was a great yote rig , and it still annoys me that I can't hunt with it anymore . Since your in BC , maybe pick up something black in 223 for smaller deer and a bolt rifle in a more suitable caliber for the bigger stuff ? You can pick up a decent 308 or , my favorite , 303 for a pretty reasonable amount , the best of both worlds ........ and you get TWO rifles .
