Black Rifle Reccomendations

What will you be hunting?

To offer a black rifle ~feel, and reasonable accuracy for hunting, I'd suggest an 858.
I've competed with 7.62x39, and hunted with it, but in a different platform.

Check Trade Ex for hunting rifles, $300ish for something with experience.
That might leave enough for one of the AR deals.

Your budget is disproportional to your wants. Something's gotta give.

I was hoping to use it as a deer gun. So I was thinking of a gun in .308 or 7.62. By the sounds of most of the replies, my budget for a "decent" double duty gun isn't going to work. Thanks for the info.

The key word here fellas is non restricted for under $1000.

Sadly bud, the only good black rifle that can be had for that price range is an AR which is a named Restricted.

Your other decent options are the following:
Vz-58
T97NSR

There are a few others, but in mumy opinion, not worth mentioning. Both of the above rifles walk the line of being a "red rifle" as well due to thier background, but I assume you meant "tactical style" when you said Black rifle.

The Vz is the best pick up and shoot it how it is rifle in my opinion. Nothing makes it bad, but nothing makes it amazing either. Its just a sound choice for rifle in this price range.

The T97 has a lot of things that are all wrong from factory, but boasts many good attributes that lend itself to being a pretty awesome Black Rifle once fixed. The question is how much are you willing to pay to correct those issues and in the end just have a T97 chinese quality built rifle for a price boardering used Tavor territory. Some times it is cheapest just to buy once and cry once.

I highly recommend against spending to much on an SKS. I was a gun newb 3 years ago and got my first gun, an SKS. Being a Tacticool Fool, I got the ATI folding Stock, 2x tapco 5/20 mags, NC star beyonet mounted bipod, scope and scope mount, murry spring assisted firing pin and of coarse a laser. The thing weighed a ton, was unwieldy even with the folder stock, bipod was ####ty, and the mags required 3 hands to do a mag change. Scope didnt hold zero and blocked the use of stripper clips.

It was a learning curve that was costly, and only left me wanting more as time went on. Shortly there after the Vz58 swept me off my feet. Great rifle, but I strolled apon the Tavor thanks to TV-PressPass' youtube channel, and after that I had my eyes on the prize and all I could save went towards getting a Tavor. When the day finally came around to get one I was happy as a pig in mud, and as time has progressed I have only gotten happier with it with the addition of quality glass and other accessories.

Seriously consider your actions, and know that if your one of those people that is wanting a quality rig, buying once and crying once is the way to go.

I was looking at the Tavor and was sold on its performance, look, and the fact it is non-restricted. Then I looked up retailers and saw its price!! I understand "you get what you pay for" but its way out of my budget. Thanks for the heads up on the SKS

I kind of knew it was a pipe dream to find a versatile gun for less than a $1000 that was of good quality. I don't do much competition shooting anymore and hate the idea of spending big money on an AR that can only be shot at a registered club!! Hopefully some of the useless legislation will change.
What are the opinions on a Norinco AR? If its a decent gun, $500 is not unreasonable. If its not worth spending time and money on, then its time to practice some patience. Thanks for all the info.

I would buy a cz/vz ahead of a norinco. Non restricted, serviceable plinker, serviceable for tactical tasking, can drop a deer as well as a 30-30 more or less. And cheap ammo since you're on a budget.

Or... What about a tacticool 10-22 and a bolt gun for hunting?

Watch the EE. I got this M305 as you see it with 2 5/20 mags and only 40 rounds through it for $800 shipped in a hard case! Now its one of my favorites. I call it the "Desert Storm"

^Good deal! Right now there's a Mini14 in an archangel stock on the EE for 900, which is more than reasonable, and probably more suitable for what you want than ending up with a bolt action .223

This is tempting but the "proverbial bullet" will probably bite back!! It is definitely a good choice to fit my hunting/tactical needs!

If you watch like a hawk you will probably see a xcr-l pop up on the EE for 1600. Cheaper than a tavor, and they are great rifles IMO.

Post #21 has Roadhawk stating he wants a .308 for hunting deer, cancelling out most of the more affordable NR black rifles and the XCR-L and Tavor as well.

So maybe a Norinco AR (I can't believe I just suggested buying a Norinco AR:stirthepot2:) for about $500 or whatever they sell for and while your at it a Norinco M-305 if you must have a Semi.-Auto. in .308 for hunting (which is somewhere around $500 as well).

Seriously though, both these rifles are on the lower end of the pricing and quality scale however many will argue that they have great fun and decent reliability with them.

So if scraping up more cash is out of the equation then this is probably your best bet at getting what you want if $1,000 is your total limit...

Cheers D
