Black Rifle #### *Vid*

While a great shoot out I think the 1978 movie Shoot starring Earnest Borgnine and Cliff Robertson well worth mentioning as a decent shoot out also (plus it was filmed in Canada believe it or not).

Awful movie which most people only can remember 2minutes of. Of course the reason for the carbines, particularly Pacino is that he is barely 5ft tall, and a full length would (pun unitended) dwarf him. Likewise why most of his shot are just of him on the screen and odd angles.
I love starting the engagement in the middle of such an unnaturally busy downtown core...guess they couldnt tail them to a less populated spot.

Ahh what? Heat is the movie for which all other "organized crime" movies are judged against. The shootout is the best movie shootout ever filmed. The level of realism and attention to detail put into this film by Michael Mann is nothing short of amazing. Michael Mann also directed:

Miami Vice(both the movie and the series)
Public Enemies
Collateral
The Aviator
Last of the Mohicans

I can see he's accustomed to producing garbage.

As for the "starting the engagement in the middle of such an unnaturally busy downtown core". If you had watched the movie and paid attention, it was Val Kilmer's character "Chris Shiherlis" who engages "Sgt. Drucker" and "detective Casals" when they are spotted across the street. This is clearly seen at 1:38 of the linked youtube video. Pacino "Lt. Vincent Hanna" and his crew did not start the engagement.

As for the Reason behind the FN-FNC being used. I call BS on your reasoning. The Fn-FNC is almost exactly the same size and weight as a 20" AR15. Seeing how his FN-FNC was also sporting the fixed LOP folding stock there is no logical reason to believe that the Fn-FNC was selected because of Pacino's stature.

I think the choice of having an FNC was to give Pacino's character a more sophisticated and exotic feel. Isn't he some Ex-ninja/jedi operator?

Never seen the video, but that was a pretty cool clip.

The one thing I did notice is the director decided that guns can fire about 200 rounds between magazine changes, but nobody is perfect. ;)

it looks like they have 50 round mags..doesn't seem like they are stretching reload times to me.

At least they have extra mags on their person. I like to think they reload when the camera changes angle so the momentum of the scene doesnt stop.

I Love that part of the movie

They do reload, the scene was rehearsed on the range with live ammo before ever hitting the streets with blanks. What you are likely seeing is the same magazine being fired from several angles. If you haven't seen the movie you definitely need to see it.

Heat certainly had some excellent technical directing - Mr. Mann must have had ex military or police as advisors on set.

Former SAS according to the bonus video about the making of HEAT. He also used the "services" of some organized crime folks(for real) to "mentor" De Niro and his crew as well as real LAPD detectives for Pacino's crew. The bank job was actually planned out by De Niro and his crew. So much so that Sizemore and Kilmer actually opened phony accounts to obtain a better look inside the bank for their mock heist plan. Its no wonder they look so natural walking into the bank, they've been there before and actually planned the robbery...

Mann does some very good work, one of the few who actually cares if the action scenes are 'do-able'. Collateral is another great movie with firearms use that doesn't require three arms and a magic pistol.
