As a new owner of a Sabre Industries XR-15, a friend recently asked me how many AR-15 type rifles are registered in Canada. I can remember a post here not to long ago, but the search function is finding nothing. If anyone can give me some rough numbers to satisfy my friends (and my) curiousity that would be great. Thanks guys.

you have to remember that not all the black guns are registered, nor are they all REGISTERABLE- the tavor, the ar 180b come to mind immedately, and there's going to be more as the years go on- moreover, the registration was a voluntary thing, so the registy is NOT accurate in terms of numbers-prior to them going restricted, the ar's were just like any other long gun- sold otc with just the retailer keeping books on them- no gov't involvement- the only stats supplied were volunteered by the owners when threatened by 5 years improsonment and confiscation

yea, not evey gunstore is going to carry ar's or anything close to that - even if they do, there's only a few, if any, and they may not be in the config you want- when they sold for 1099 new, there used to be almost full racks of them- that was the 20 inch a2 with the bayonet and 2 -20 round mags

I agree that price is the leading factor for not seeing them on the shelf at every store, but I see them alot at the ranges?

a lot of those are built up by their owners, or "special" orders- not everybody wants the 20 inch barrel, or a telescopic butt- the ar is modular, so you can mix and match to your heart's content

When they went from non-restricted to restricted, 35,000 out of the 50,000 imported into the country were registered. The AR15 has really seemed to gain in popularity, I would guess there are now around 60,000 registered in Canada.

Miller was spouting that there are 600K handguns in Ontario... So I think the number is low... Heck we had a survey here a while ago and with the 800 or so here the answered we had 50K

I seem to recall there were 120K AR-variants a couple (5) years ago.. So I would guess we are quickly approaching the 200K mark

I doubt it's anywhere near 200k. Here in the states, it's estimated we have around a million, and AR-15's are much easier to get here.
