I want a non restricted black rifle. Dependability and accuracy are key, money is no object. I have read lots on the xcr and 180b but don't know much about the SIG. Which would you choose and why?

There hasn't been a new AR-180b come into Canada in what, two years? The only source is to scrabble around for one on the used market.

The XCR is in serious demand and very short supply. The waiting list to get one new has to be close to a year. Your only source to get one in a reasonable period of time is to scrabble around for one on the used market.

SIGs have been in steady supply for years. I can think of stores that I could walk into tomorrow and buy one off the shelf. A couple of Canada's best known mail order type places list them in stock.

The AR-180b was an attempt by an aftermarket maker to create an economy rifle for recreational use. The XCR is an attempt by an aftermarket maker to create a serious rifle, but it is an new an unproven design. SIG is a century old industrial and military firm that has made combat arms for years. The Black Special is a combination of some of their successful products.

SIG. It isn't even a question.

This guy probably put it the best of anyone. I personally don't care for the sig but thats my preferance but it is easily available and its accuracy is legendary.

You need to handle them all. The sig fits and functions nicely. It is ready to take abuse, but does not have a free float barrel, the barrel is light weight, and it is heavy. Don't mind that, it is your rifle.

XCR might have some issues during a break in, and it is not a combat ready rifle. It does have a floated 1:9 heavy barrel though.

The ar180 is a used market kind of thing.

There is also the tavor, and type 97

You consider Armalite and Robarm after market manufacturers? I don't think I've ever after market parts by either.

Unless you are worried about restricted AR15 is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of price, versatility, handling, controls, accuracy etc.

Anything for a similar price just does not compare and everything else is way more expensive and not much better IMHO

Save money and buy yourself a non-restricted type 97 that CanAm in importing. Great rifle for the money. Bullpup design, takes AR mags, piston driven, gas regulator, comes apart easier than any other "black rifle" I've owned and is accurate. I've never read about any issues with reliability and mine has run 100%. Oh yeah, the price will be $849 shipped. Mods are comming for it's shortcomings (optics rail and mag release).

Edit: Go to the red rifles forum to read more!!!

NO NORINCO, NO HK, NO RESTRICTED.

I would LOVE an AR15, but a rifle that can only legally be fired at a range would be too much for me to handle. I have a hard enough time resisting the urge to take my handguns out to the back 40. Basically I want something to replace my ranch rifle as my primary varmint rig.

Not to sidetrack too much;

Norinco, well I can understand the anti commi sentiment and your desire for a non-restircted makes sense.

But would you mind explaining your dismissing the SL8, I just got one and it is very accurate, and I do like to hear about folks opinions on guns I buy. Thanks.

Well that narrows your choices down to the Tavor AR180B and XCR methinks. The tavor at the moment won't satisfy your varmit needs as the Meprolight sight sucks for anything beyond 25 yards and there isn't any rails out for it yet unless you make your own. Probably have to go with the AR180b or the XCR. The XCR has plenty of accessory rails for any do dads you want to put on it. I am not sure about the AR180b as I don't have experience with it but you should be able find rails and such it as well.

That is YOUR opinion (and, I will admit, the opinion of many), BUT...

MY opinion is that I will not ever spend money on an AR - The Queen loaned me a couple for a while, and I was NOT impressed. Have tried a few since, and STILL not impressed.

Of the list presented, Swissarms is the only real option, if finances are not limited.

Have a super day!

Neal

Thanks for all the replies guys. You confirmed what I expected, now just to decide on classic green or black.

As far as HK, it is nothing against the performance, I just don't like the way they look and feel.
