I’ve finally put away enough money to get a black special but I can’t decide if I should get the target model or the standard model. If I buy the target model it will be a while before I can afford to put some type of optic on it and I don’t think I will be happy with the flip up rear sight in the mean time. If I get the standard model I am concerned that the rear sight will make it awkward to mount a scope and make it uncomfortable to shoot with the scope.

Does anyone have any advise on which model I should buy?

Optic

I have a green classic with rear sight and have mounted a B+T rail, it fits my ACOG and Hensoldt with ARMS adapters very easily using a SIG cheek rest for alignment, I prefer the vesatility of having iron sights available plus a scope. There is no issue with mounting a high power scope with the apropriate adapters. Cheers. g2.

I would agree, and as luck would have it, TSE has a small production run of greens with factory 1:7 twist barrels.

If you're planning on running a scope 99.9 percent of the time, get the target model. If not go for the Classic.

With the target model you have your "back up sights" and it's exceptionally easy to mount the scope. You don't need riser pieces for the scope, or cheek add ons which I might add aren't cheap.

Really it depends on what you plan on doing.

I'd go with the standard model as Scarecrow mentioned. From all the rifles I've seen it has one of the best iron sights on it and it will be a shame to miss out on it.

Irons don't fail.... Or at least, if the rifle suffers some sort of trauma catastophic enough to damage the iron sights, I'm guessing that the whole thing is toast!

And, IMHO, flat-tops look..... not quite right.

...."standard" vs. "target model"....

...a couple of years ago I personally compared the paper factory test targets of a Black Special "target model" with my own green "standard" model.....after a careful comparison, I could not see any appreciable difference in accuracy and concluded that there was no advantage in purchasing it...only the "sniper models" showed smaller groups and considered for additional purchase.....

I have a flat top 17" carbine. Used to have a Leupold 1.5-5 SPR scope on it. I recently put a 3X Compact ACOG on it with red chevron (from Police Ordnance, only took 1 week!!!)

I kind on like the flat top if you're going to use an optic on it.

The only difference between the target model and the classic are the flat top and the sights. It's not as a whole more accurate. Although individual rifles will naturally vary.

For optics mounting the flat top is very convenient. You have the back up sights that you'll probably never use.

If you're going to shoot without optics, then get the Classic. For optics such as lager scopes, then the target model works like a charm.

For mine I threw on a set of Zeiss (Warne) quick release rings and it was as simple as that.

mine wears a bushnell 4200 6x24 50mm obj 30mm main tube, b&T rail and burris extreme extra high rings, plus a cheek piece, fits and works great for varmint shooting off the ground, for carry I use a bushnell 3200 5-15 x40mm, tactical on an arms # 63 see thru mount with the quick releases. In between the 2 are burris extreme low rings. bout 1800-1900 bucks said and done but i feel well worth it compared to getting a leupy,NF or S&B for more cash. next I'm going to fit the 4200 on an arms 63 so both will store nicely into my phantom pack. the 3200 fits nice but the 4200 is to bigs. So I feel your pain man and i was in your position when i bought my first swiss arms and look what it has lead to. so for a year my irons on my classic were my best friends and surprisingly accurate out to 200yrds on Ontario ground hogs. But the best thing about these beast they give you an excuse to buy the nice gear.

Does anyone have a Black Special ACOG combo? and if so is this a suitable optic for this particular rifle ???

Pictures would be great.

Mounting Options For Swiss Arms

Just to give you an idea of the options available to you go to the Photo Gallery section and look under the title "show us your PE90 swiss rifles" there are around aprox. 20 pages of photos detaling different set ups, so you should find an option that suits you in there. Cheers. g2.
