I do not know much about the history or the avail models out there but I have a sig 226 that shoots amazing, I love the gun. It looks like all the other guys 226 except it is etched in the slide that it is stainless. Its painted black. Anyone familiar with this? I wonder if it is just the slide? I wouldn't mind polishing it up if I could.

I think that after they stopped making folded carbon steel slides, they started to engrave "Stainless" on the slide. At sometime point they just stopped doing so since all the slides were stainless...

This should be right if my memory serves me well ;)

Do you know the pistol's build date or could you post the 3 first numbers of the serial to situate it in time?

Thanks!

Even if it's a later one, if it has a stainless frame, it should still say stainless on the slide. Not sure if this always holds true, but as far as I know, it's more an indicator of the frame material than the slide.

Except for the uncoated stainless slides from the US, and the coated stainless frames and slides from Germany...

Then there are the new P226 "Stainless Nitron" pistols that just came out... Full stainless slides and frames finished in black Nitron top and bottom. Doubt they're in Canada yet as they've just started appearing in the USA.

Aren't those overstock from a contract for the RCMP? I might be mixing some stories...

I do know for sure there is a thread on sigforum where they track down those all stainless nitron pistols...

I believe those were out in the secondary market before these ones came out. If I'm not mistaken, the overstock ones were DAO or DAK. The ones that were just recently released by Sig are the standard DA/SA in 9mm - just with an all steel build (with complete Nitron finishing)... They're actually listed on the Sig website under the 226 models...

I wonder when we will see those here. I have an all stainless Sig 226 in 9mm and it's a joy to shoot. The extra weight really soaks up any recoil and it's very accurate.
The all stainless model without Nitron never went out of production and they are readilly availaible on US.vendor sites. One of the reasons it never went away is that it is on the California approved list and ironically when you find them on US. sites they are usually shipped with Calif. compliant 10 round mags.

Funny how none of the 226ST's are presently available up here though. The only ones that we see regularly are the all stainless Elite models. I can only assume that this one will follow suit and will more than likely be a special order for those interested (ie. through Questar)...

Yeah. They used to be regularly stocked by dealers up here and with the 10 round mags you would think it would be a no-brainer. I picked mine up from a Canadian dealer a few years ago and I'm glad I did as I'm not a big fan of the beavertail and I can take or leave the SRT. Plus it wasn't much more than a regular 226 at the time.
If the Nitron ones become availiable here I would love one in .40.
