Black Tip Projectiles

I'd be all over AP bullets... Too bad supply is hard to find.

Can I ask why? It's just out of curiosity.

To me it seems like APs would cost quite a bit more than anything else, would be next to useless for hunting, would quickly destroy metallic targets, and wouldn't be any better for shooting paper targets than anything else.

What you shoot with your firearm is your business, but I'm curious as I can't even imagine coming up with an explanation to justify the additional cost of AP, even if that additional cost was just marginal.

I'm not his wife, so not asking to justify. Just asking out of curiosity.

I had to ask some else to read this thing out loud to figure out wtf you wanted to communicate. For the non-15-years-old-texting-in-french, here's a translation in a language actually spoken by real humans, and my answer below:

Look, if you don't know what to do with something, it doesn't mean it's unusable. Just a thought.

You are right that I don't know what I would do with AP ammos. And maybe there's a use for it. Hence, me asking the question "Why would you be all over AP bullets?". Question is open to anyone who would buy AP bullets/ammos btw...

I'm not sure what's your point, except butchering the french language. If you know a good use for AP ammos, the stage is yours.

i have a 1" plate of steel and id like to see how many rounds it would take to pierce.;)

no point for elmer

Laugh2 dont be too hard on him. im the kind of guy that buys stuff just because i can.

P.S. CanadaAmmo i would be looking for 556, 762x39, 308, 8mm mouser, 3006, or 50 BMG. if you could find any.:)

See, curiosity. Completely reasonable, well thought of, even scientifically valid reason to buy anything.

I will simultaneously save you some $$$ and maybe break your fun. But depending on your range and strength of your steel, at 30m, medium hardness steel (something like 1060) :
2 or 3, 1 or 2, 1 or 2, 1 or 2 and obviously just 1.

Adjust accordingly for range, thickness and hardness.

As a rule of thumb, an M995 will go through a train track and then through a 80kg animal. That's what they say in the CF at least. Never measured the thickness of a train track, but it looks <1''.

the plate i have is mild steel and has been hit with 50.bmg lead core multiple times. not even close to penetrating (less than 1/4 of an inch deep).
i have been more impressed with the penetration from 3006 lead core which almost looks just as deep.. it really surprised me.

I want some because I don't have any... I had a bunch of .50 BMG AP ammo but lost it in a housefire. Some M2 .30 type bullets would be nifty.

Lead bullets of any kind won't do much to a steel plate unless it's got some kind of steel jacket and the plate is held quite strongly, like if it's fixed to a cinder block.

Most AP are some kind of tungsten alloy core, which is both hard AF and expensive AF. Those tungsten alloys are about the same as the tungsten alloys used to make dremel bits that can cut through hardened high-carbon steel. These bullets tends to punch a tiny hole just their own size into anything (that's why they're absolutely the worst thing to use for hunting; you're almost sure that the bullet will go through and not expand in the animal). When they go through an homogeneous substance like a metal plate, the hole left almost looks like a perfectly drilled hole, with nothing bent around it.

A tiny 5.56 will pierce through 1/2 inch or armored steel, so I'm almost certain all the calibres you wanna try would pierce through your 1'' steel plate if it's mild enough, with maybe the exception of the 7.62x39, which is barely more energetic than the 5.56.

Black tips .50 bmg will go through the armor of an APC and its engine block, stopping the APC right in its track. I've seen a british soldier stop an iraqui apc with a single shot of .50 (using a barret) in the engine at a distance of about a km. It went through the armor making a hole just big enough for itself, then ruined the engine, stopping the APC like the engine had been turned off. So if you somehow put your hand on some .50 black tip, be very careful to place a boatload of sand or anything that will absorb energy behind it, not just a couple of cinder block, cause these bullets don't behave like we're used too with our normal lead core. They will go forward and forward until all their kinetic energy is dissipated, and they don't lose that much of it when they hit something if they go through it.

APs are probably not for sale anywhere in canada in the civilian market for obvious reasons, so I doubt you'll get your hands on any, but if you really want to see some in action, a trip south of the border is probably the best way. Other then that, the CF are always looking for recruits...

Did you try a few before you lost them to fire? if so, how thick a steel plate did they went through? if you used them for hunting, did you manage to create an hydrostatic shock into any north-american game? If so, how? still curious...

I definitely did not use them for hunting... As far as damage to steel they weren't as impressive as you'd think. In 1" mild steel they'd usually just bury themselves almost making it out the back.
