I give up on the search function, i can never find what i need, always a tonne of usless crap which is completely unrelated to my search.

Anyhow,

Looking into a ruskie SKS, two questions

Black bolt vs Silver: I assume the black is just a coating of some form and silver is better (its 50$ more for the silver)

and secondly,

There are rifles available from another company they have them listed as G2 and G3, the G3 being more expensive and crome lined barrel. Is it worth the 100$ extra for chrome line if i'm shooting surlpus and cleaning every time I go out?

The black bolt tends to be on refurbished SKSs.

If you are looking for a simple shooter, get the black bolt if the price is cheaper.

As for the chrome lined question.
Get the steel if you clean right after.
The chrome will rust as well if you do not clean it.

Some also argue that the steel has better accuracy, but I doubt it makes much difference with surplus ammo.

I find that the gas system nees more TLC than the barrel.

If you are looking for a SKS, look in your local gun shop. That way you can decide if the looks of the rifle appeals to you. The prices vary due to the cosmetics of the rifle. The last SKS I purchased local had a painted black bolt carrier and the rest of the rifle was blued. Stripped the paint off the carrier and polished, I now had a silver bolt, once again cosmetics. Most of the Russian SKS rifles have chrome lined barrels except for the early ones. Just check the barrel crown to see if its a chrome barrel. I noticed that a lot of the Russian refurbs sell on EE for between $150.00 to $200.00 shipped no tax.

"Refurb" SKS's come in every configuration and combination, some mildly refurbished to heavily refurbished. One of my shooters has only a 1950's replacement laminate stock and the rest is completely original, another has only a 1960-70's replacement laminate stock and a blued bayo and possibly a replacement gas rod, the rest is all original, and finally my most recently purchased shooter has been completely repainted (very durable coating though) and a newer barrel and gas tube assembly, but has a silver bolt! The last one, BTW, happens to be my best shooter. As the other poster mentioned, buy the one that appeals to you the most. If you like two of them, buy both!

id go with the crome barrel definiently worht the extra cash, if u shoot alot. plus if u do miss a place cleaning that one terrible time it will be harder for it to rust not impossible but slower and harder. id sugest getting a non refurb one if there in good shap but thats a personal and prise choice

Thank you all; I plan to shoot as much as I can afford I was inclined toward the Chromlined as i cant find "new" x39 here in town; only surplus crates.

Thanks for the info on the black vs chrome.

I'm not bjs7293, but the answer is:

EE = Equipment Exchange

You must apply to be allowed to view it. A link to instructions is just under the Equipment Exchange sub-forum title. Not hard to get access, just have to follow a few steps.

I don't think too many people are paying 650 for sks-d's. On average, from what I have gathered from actual sellers, is 400-450.

And I assure you - I highly doubt anyone is selling mall ninja sks's and getting 650.

Don't pay more than 200 bucks for an sks in great shape.
