blackfeather stock arrived!

No range test yet

I haven't heard much about testing the Blackfeather on the range. I have yet to get mine out but it sure looks purdy. Anyone else have any comparissons? Lets see some more pics.

Retainer screw

A couple of crummy cell phone shots but you get the idea. Would like to duracoat the upper handguard to be dark flat earth as well. Currently having trouble pulling the flash hider so my install is on hold at the moment. =(

Buttstock is Vltor Emod with Vltor buffer tube
Grip is Magpul Miad
Scope is a older Simmons 4-12 X 50mm my pops gave to me and said "if it dies, it dies"
Waiting on a CASM for the mount.

Make sure you have removed the tiny screw that prevents the castle nut from backing off. Once that was out mine came off easily. I thought mine may have been spot welded in place. I made the mistake of removing the larger screw above it and not the little wee one. I blasted it with the torch, banged it with punches, and tried brute force. Of course I felt like a plank when I realized my mistake. The right tool helps too. Good luck

I had mine out at the range today, first time I've had my m14 out in months. Worked great, I like it a lot better then just a standard stock. Can't say I noticed any drastic improvements in accuracy, mind you I was only using some norinco ammo I have. Groups were right around the 1-2moa. Still able to hit the 300yard gong every time.

Yep, the set screw is out and the castle nut is loose. It's just steadfastly refusing to break free. Mine seems to have a pretty good chunk tacked.

I have put the install on hold as I'm on the road.
But I noticed I could not find any of the barrel adjustment features that Laz went on and on about both here and on other forums..... Was kinda the reason my client purchased this chassis as he was excited in this advertised feature that I can't seem to find ??

Maybe this which you have to buy separate?

The New M14.ca Oprod Guide: The Heart of the Rifle
The M14.ca oprod guide (ORG) is made from 4140 HTSR (heat treated and stress relieved) steel and offers the largest surface bearing area of any oprod guide available and a secure connection to the barrel.

The unique new adjustable M14.ca oprod guide free floats the barrel from the ORG forward, and is adjustable vertically, which allows you to tune your M14 rifle in a way no other system can. You can adjust barrel to stock vertical tension and thereby adjust "barrel harmonics" to maximize accuracy with an individual load. Or you can simply set the tension adjustment at neutral, which has shown in testing to provide improved average accuracy with many different loads.

The M14.ca ORG is quad-locked: inside the stock by massive alloy buttresses, with three set screws on the barrel, at the forearm with a big 1/4" grade 8 bolt at it's base, and optionally, with a new heavy duty coiled cross pin. When set up correctly, this affords you a "0" rotation design that is vertically adjustable but still quickly removable. This quick release feature allows you to swap in another barreled receiver in minutes, so one stock can be used with more than one barreled action.

The Blackfeather® oprod guide also affords special releif cuts on both sides of the oprod channel to allow for packing grease. This simple innovation offers lubrication of the oprod guide during the course of fire and is present in no other design.

The oprod guide connects to the forearm with a heavy duty hardened steel anti-wear plate, which provides a large surface bearing area that will not peen or distort even after extensive use.

I will have a document up on M14.ca today entitled "Engineering and Design Considerations of the Tension Adjustable Oprod Guide."

Blackfeather Range Report

Before I start...some disclaimers. I'm a relative newb at bench-rest range shooting so take my feedback with a grain of salt.

The Blackfeather is a very nicely finished product with tight tolerances all round. It's solid aluminum with no thin gauge sections anywhere that I can see. It installs easily if one reads and follows the instructions, assuming the receiver is within reasonable spec. Compared to removing the damned flash hider, installing the Op. Rod Guide was a breeze.

On to the good stuff. The platform is a Norinco, 22" M305 that starts out almost bone stock with perhaps 20 rounds through it. The only additions are a CASM mount and Zeiss 3-9 x40 scope.

See the groups below. These are at 100 yds with Norinco FMJ after sighting in. Best group was 4" to 5". Group 3 was fairly tight (2.5") except for a flyer from the last shot. Some stringing of the groups and likely not the best the rifle could do. It was late in the day and we were a little rushed.

The next pics were after the Blackfeather install. Changes at this point include the installation of a SEI Vortex flash hider and some gas lock shims (not enough to make tight - ran out of shims). The BF is configured with a Hogue grip and a Magpul CTR butt stock. While the CTR is nice and solid (no wiggle) it isn't a great choice for bench rest shooting. The pull is a little short, the base/underneath of the stock comes to a point which makes it a little hard to put a sandbag under there without interference with one's shoulder. Also (relevant only for us girliemen), the rubber butt pad on the stock is much narrower than a US GI, which concentrates recoil. I was actually sore after about 50 rounds.

As of this report I haven't added any Op. Rod Guide tension. A a nice surprise was "ping" where I hadn't had this before.

So how did it group? See below.

Groups #1 and #2 were for sighting-in since we had to remove the scope to do the install. Groups 1 to 5 were shot with Norc FMJ with diameter being about 4" to 5". At this point I was fiddling with the butt stock trying to get comfortable. The best group was the #1 which as about 1.5" if we discount the last round flyer.

We then switched ammo to Commercial grade Winchester Super-X, 150gr. for group #6. Surprise! That's an honest 2", 5-round group. One surprise was that the POI was 3" lower then with the FMJ. This was kinda interesting so 12 clicks up on the scope the next groups were as follows:

The center group was shot with Win Super X - a 2.5" core group with a flyer. I was a little distracted by the muzzle blast coming from my buddy shooting his shorty next to me with a muzzle brake, but the result still is not bad. After readjusting the scope for a change in ammo, the remaining groups were shot with FMJ in the order of upper right, upper left, lower left. The upper right group only shows 3 rounds where I think two rounds hit the cross-bar of the target stand that we were using. The remaining groups were 2-3 inches.

I think it's a little early to make definite conclusions. I'd have to say that the ammunition introduces more variability than the rifle at this point. I have to try out a variety of Commercial grade ammo to see what the rifle can truly do (I'm not prepared to reload right now).

The next mods include a cheek rest for the CTR, an op. rod. spring guide (supplied as part of the Blackfeather kit but shipped separately) and more shims for the gas lock.

I have to say I'm enjoying this toy and am getting more confident in my first-round accuracy. I need to find somewhere I can do some prone or off-hand shooting.

Well heres my blackfeather all complete with all the little pieces I was waiting for. Weight is definetly on the heavy side about 14lbs with a 20/5 round mag loaded. Heres some pics.

What kind of flashlight you going to put on it? I recommend those O-Light T25's they're seriously badass and take AA batteries. 210 lumens lasts like an hour, or you can go all strobe light with it. The T15 takes 1x AA battery and it's a lot smaller, good for your pocket but you can slap it on your gun np.

Lol no flashlight at this time. I'm not sure if I like how much stuff is on there already.

I'm not trying to be a douche, but with the pistol grip and scope turrets does that gun fit in a gun case?

I have a redhead hard case that actually fits it and my 14.5inch AR(broken down of course.) To be honest eventually I'm going to downsize the scope, it works great but just a little bulky and to big for what I use the rifle for.

I really like the look of the blackfeather but thought the CASM scope mount sets the scope up pretty high . If I was to build one I feel I would go this route with a Factory made Shorty in it. :HFU:
