I recently picked up a BH Serpa CQB kydex holster for my Glock 17 for IDPA. I found the retention excellent and the push button release very fast. I was able to get 1.2 second draws from the concealment. It is very fast and easy to get used to.
The release button is perfectly in line with your index finger, as you grasp your pistol grip your finger automatically is over the button. If you practice you can get extremely fast draws.
I decided to try my draws compared to my CR Speed holster, and I found it was actually a little faster on average. With the Serpa, there is no way you can inadvertently knock your pistol out of the holster, so I am able to grab the pistol grip with more aggressively without worrying about knocking it out. After a bit of practice I able to repeat this. If you attempt to pull the pistol out before you depress the release button you will give yourself "The Mother of all Wedgies".
I have used the BH Serpa CQB in IDPA but I wondered who it would be for IPSC? I know it is not supposed to be a speed holster, or even a race holster, but how good was it in competition? I used it in a recent Level III IPSC match and had no problems what so ever. I did not feel under equipped what so ever. My draws were just as fast as anyone there and there was no chance of dropping the pistol... one less thing to worry about. This holster is fast, just as fast if not faster than the race holster, easier to use with practice and more forgiving.
I also tried the BH magazine holders that go with the Serpa series. These double stack mag holders have a flexible tensioner that allows you to use just about any type of double stack magazine. They work for my 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45acp double stack magazines.
The magazine holders are designed to clip onto or slide onto your belt. 5 BH magazine holders take up just 9.25 inches on my belt compared to 13.5 inches for my 5 Safariland magazine holders on my competition belt. This translates into having all 5 of my magazines closer together and within easy reach.
This combination setup is not a full blown race rig but it works and works very effectively. I find this better suited for me. I can now use the exact same rig for IPSC, IDPA, Tactical/Practical Shooting, and conceal carry.
This is my setup for my Glock 17 for IDPA and IPSC. I now have a setup that is completely the same for most of my shooting sports. I will be able to easily transition from one to another without changing gear or my setup. Practices and training will not differ much.
