I have to load some 12 gauge black powder loads for a rendezvous and am almost out of felt wads.
I think I read some where that the combination plastic wad and shotcup should not be used in blackpowder loads.
Sure would make it simpler if I could use the plastic wads.
Advice, please.

black powder melts plastic as it burns; you will potentially coat the inside of your barrel with plastic. You can probably get away with it for a couple of shots but would not recommend shooting plastic wads for more than a very few shots.

Couldn't you just cut your own felt wads? An appropriately sized hole saw might work, or fabricate a punch and use a hammer

You may want to keep all components original and shun the dreaded plastic....I will let you in on a trick that I am only going to tell you and nobody else....I have been loading and shooting black powder shotgun shells for years and the most important tip has to do with the wads...and this you can not do with plastic.....in your wad column (in the middle) use a wad that has BL. POWDER LUBRICANT melted into it....It keeps fouling soft, makes subsequent rounds shot and feed better.....allows subsequent shots to clean out barrel somewhat.....makes cleanup afterward much easier!! M.t. Chambers supply sells wads, madefrom card, felt, vegetable fibre, overpowder, overshot, Black Powder Lube, etc.

where are you?

I have a Lee loader with bushing drilled out for FFg & a few packs of Wonder Lube wads, shot cards & shot. Also have a few hundred loaded BP 12ga rnds. Don't shoot BP anymore

M.T. Chambers is in Prince Albert Sask.(land of Gov. interference), you really should shoot them off, for safety sake! Although I don't envy you and the cleanup required! I bought some Kent B.P. Shells awhile ago and they shot well but the cleanup was horrendous as they didn't use anything to mitigate the fouling.

Use news paper!, try it , ball up enough to give you about 1"-1.50" of wad,it does'nt blow your pattern and it acts like a cushion for you shot. It stays together until it leaves the barrel. I assume that you are talking about a muzzleloading shotgun??

Go to "Track of the Wolf" and you can purchase all the wads you need for loading either Muzzle loading shot guns or the Black Powder Cartridges.
Good Shootin,
