For the last four years i have been using a product called Ol thunder, for a patch lube as well as cleaning my guns. It works really well. It is blue in colour . I bet it is made from some simple ingredients. I would like to make up a batch and save some money, does anyone know what it is made from ?

It's basic ingredient is water soluable cutting oil.
13 oz water
3 oz cutting oil
1 oz Murphys Oil soap
If you have trouble finding cutting let me know, I've got extra.
Cheers nessy.

Thanks Nessy. I think i have seen that Murphy`s oil soap at Wallmart, but have never come across water soluble oil? Where would be a good place to find some?

water soluable cutting oil is about $23 - $25 per gallon at Acklands and I use about 15% oil / 85% water. that works out to about $1 per quart of lube vs $10 or so for Old Thunder. You can put a bit of oil of wintergreen in the mix to make it smell pretty :>)

cheers mooncoon

acklands will only deal,s with companies here in ontario no?it,s not open to the public....this is what i was told by a guy at work...but he not the brightest one around

Here is a recipe for another good lube.
Stumpkillers Moose Milk.

Isopropyl (91%)____ 8oz.
Castor Oil_________ 3oz.
Murphy's Oil Soap__ 1oz.
Witch Hazel_______ 4oz.
Water(non-chlorinated) _ 16oz.

Add in the above order and shake well to mix, and again before every use or transfer. Oil and water don't mix, dontcha know. Castor is alcohol soluable, but not in water. And yes, the witch hazel does seem to make a difference in how well it smears and coats the bore.

I dip cotton strips twice, allowing them to dry flat, for "dry patching" (it's still oily, but not messy). Works great as a wet lube .

Cheers nessy.
