Just getting into BP shooting and bought a 1858 Uberti and was wondering if I should just stick with Goex BP or try one of the substitutes?

theres various ways to clean it, the most common is to remove the barrel and nipple, and put the nipple end into a bucket of hot water and some kind of soap, and useing a tight patch on your cleaning rod pump the solution through the barrel then dry patches and finally oil, , wade

The Cleaning Solution

Myself and about half of the guys I shoot with, clean with windshield washer blue - NOT PINK - NOT GREEN. Has a small amount of soap in it as well as water and alcohol. As Wade said pump the solution up and down the bore, dry it, and then put Hoppes #9 on a patch and wipe the bore. Done!
Last year Walmart put the stuff on sale for $1.09 per 4 litre jug. I got 10 cases. I use a soup can full every time I clean a gun. Use 2 cases a year.
We only use Goex Black Powder. Cleanup is easy.
Carry on!.

I use Triple 7 FFG in my thought to load 45-120 Sharps because it is cleaner than BP (less fouling) and it can be cleaned with hot water only. Triple 7 still illegal in BPCR shooting competition so I did develop a good load with Goex FFG if ever I go into a competition.

Some folks like the BP substitutes, some don't. I don't. Where I live the cost of BP is a little cheaper than the substitutes. I have never used any of the special formulas that folks like to use. I just use water, hot if convenient and do the usual scrub and wipe. Best to be thorough and in a high humidty situation BP fouling that attracts moisture cn cause rust very quickly. BP ( and subsitutes ) should be cleaned immediately out of your brass. When I black powder shoot I have a jug of water that I toss my empty brass into. They clean up easier later and I have managed to get 25 or so reloads out of such brass as Beaumont, 11Mauser, .45-70. Usually what happens is case necks start to go especially in some of my .45-70 brass. Shooting BP weapons is another world and there are a pile of good folks out there who have their own magic formulas for loading, cleaning, lubricating and shooting. I like it all! Joe

Substitutes are just that...ok when you don't have the real thing. Use Goex...14.50$/lb taxes in compared to 30ish $ for subs?? Have fun and post your questions here...someone will help you.

Cheers

Actually for my 45-120 Sharps I load 110 gr. by volume that is 75 gr. by weight for Triple 7... not bad. The corrosive attributes of black powder just make me incomfortable to shoot it in a $2000+ rifle and that is the main reason why I shoot Triple 7 witch is equal in performance. Triple 7 is easy to wipe off from the barrel after a shooting session.
