BlackTail Deer

One of these years I'll have to go up and hunt it. I've heard its beautiful. Seems that every year I'm heading to the interior in pursuit of bigger deer than we have here on Van Isl.

You should go .... the only thing I missed out on was the season where you can go to see the Totem poles on the southern island; it's only open certain times of the year and you need a guide, but I'd like to go back one day and see them. The dear are small, but the limit for possession is high and I haven't looked at the regs in many years, but they also have elk.

My goodness. I hadn't checked back on this thread in a while.
So many messages to go through!
I'm very appreciative for all the comments and information.

To answer one question someone asked (because of my obvious lack of knowledge) about whether I have all my hunting papers etc.
No I do not yet. I am doing the CORE at the end of February. And yes I am a BC resident.

I'm getting mixed message, I gotta be honest.
Some people are saying my 30-06 should be fine.
I mean, it does save me 5, 6, 700$

But I'm also thinking that I should find a smaller caliber rifle.
Hey. I'd probably hunt smaller game more often than larger game.
I only acquired my 30-06 because I went on 1 moose trip.

I'm quite new to all of this, but I do as much research, reading and cross referencing of information that I can.

If anyone would like to shoot out some specific recommendations that would super helpful and Very appreciated.
(Moderate pricing.
I see a Remington 783 .243 Scoped for $500 at Reliable Gun. For example.
I would consider paying more for something that will surely last me and be worth it.
Scouring the EE too as a second-hand deal is a nice thing.)

Thanks a lot people!

You don't have your hunting papers, and is taking Core at the end of the month, but acquired a .30-06 because you went on a moose hunt and you hunt smaller game more than larger game?... something isn't adding up... you have just admitted to hunting without a license on an a public forum it would seem...

Maybe he moved from another province.

Incorrect.

I said I want on a Moose Trip.

I didn't say I was hunting anything.
I fired my rifle at inanimate target(s).

I accompanied others on a Moose "Hunt"

I say what I mean, so nothing is misinterpreted. Only becomes misinterpreted if you change what I've said.
Thanks for your concern though!

If he held a valid hunting license in another province would he need to take the CORE here to get a hunting license? A buddy of mine moved to BC from the US after being there for 20 or so years and he was in another province before that and he got his PAL and hunting license quite fast and I don't think he had to take CORE to get his hunting license but I could be wrong.

It leaves it open to interpretation that you carried a firearm on a hunt without a license. Had you been stopped by CO then you likely would have been charged. An unlicensed person accompanying cannot carry. They can accompany but cannot carry. The fact the rifle you indicated you had was for taking big game, means it could be interpreted you had it for that reason. If you were just plinking you would have had a .22. The CO would have taken it as you had the rifle with you for the purpose of hunting and you likely would have been charged had you been stopped.

My dad slew truckloads of deer on Vancouver Island with a .22 Hornet.

He only took neck shots and usually shot at close range.

Time of year and weather is what is important not the rifle or calaber
Be well prepared for big winds and rain remember Haida Gwaii is just of the Alaska panhandle and shood pack the same way as you would to hunt kodiak Island
Look me up if you go towards The north end of the Island

It's actually a pretty poor bear stopper. Kills them, but much better choices that don't kick any more if you want to stop them. His .30-06 outperforms it as a bear stopper. No Grizzlies on Haida Gwaii anyhow so kind of a moot point.

With so much food available it's extremely unlikely anyone would need a bear rifle on Haida Gwaii unles there are hunting bear
A 30-06 don't blow up are small deer to bad surprisingly but a 444 marlen will bow out the entire front end of a deer

One day I'll go back .... even if it's just to camp or to go to a bed and breakfast and I'll be sure to arrange a viewing of the totem poles. I was lucky last time; it was either September or October and the weather was perfect and sunny and the camping season was over, so the sites were free. It was so warm that I had to hunt in jeans and a t-shirt and the views from the beaches were amazing. It was one of the last trips with the old man and such an amazing place.

Lots of free camping most of it right on the beach the best hunting is up high in the mountains fore big bucks
most rivers have camping spots and good fishing
summer dip netting crabs and digging clams on the beach is just as fun
