What can anybody tell about these critters. I have never hunted them before but I am headed out next week to the Charlottes to try my hand at them. At least I'll get a lay of the land and check out access, but would sure like some more info on these little devils. Anybody on here live on the Charlottes or Rupert and know about these deer? Any body want to come along and act as guide/hunting buddy? Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. I'm stabbing in the dark but would really like a nice island buck and a nice mainland buck. I would even be willing to cover lost wages if anyone is interested in taking time off work to show me around and assist in the harvesting of these deer.

I've been told they're very small, but fine eating. Apparently the place is lousy with them.

I've been trying to get my hunting partners to go; please let me know how it goes!

There are deer crawling all over the Charlottes. Most, but not all are pretty small. I would PM carverK on here, he lives and hunts there, lots. I'm sure he cold point you in the correct direction or more, he's a very friendly guy. Even without local help, there are still plenty of deer, but they don't look like trophy mulies. ;)

First deer I killed was on the QCI on a kayak trip, when I was about 14. Traditional longbow. I knew nothing about deer hunting, either. :)

One thing I should mention is that if you are offering compensation in the form of lost wages, that would definitely be viewed as illegal guiding by the BC Conservation service.

Give me a PM if you are interested in going, what the hell, the blind leading the blind, but at least we'll be hunting.........I have truck, huge camper and Ranger and big trailer, going whole hog. Will even be bringing a generator and freezer............

OK strike the offer for compensation of lost wages.........;)

Also who can explain the 5 deer possession limit but 15 deer limit, what has to happen to the first 5 deer to not be considered part of a possession limit? If they are cut wrapped and frozen are they still considered part of your possession or are they then considered processed and no longer part of your PL?

Find someone with a boat.

Or bring one of your pistol caliber lever actions for a real good time.

I think you will have a really fun hunt, very traditional fudd deep cover stalking, do not forget your flannel

Best way to find larger groups of them, but most of my experience was south of there. I think a lot of local guys will shoot them from boat deck. If its a numbers game the boat will help you cover a lot of area in that territory.

Keep in mind the restrictions on motors and shooting in boats.

I want to say be very careful with boats up there this time of year as well though. Conditions can change rapidly

I'm thinking 12 ft Zodiac actually, and running close to shore as I'm not much of a water person...........

Bring a rod for halibut....been thinking of heading there myself if I can get caught up with work. When are you going?

Rennel sound was good the last time i was there...the deer were bigger on the south island though.

The place should be crawling with them, best bet would be south island and launch your boat at moresby camp. Any of the inlets or islands will have deer. You'll find a lot of road warriors as the bush is thick , thick , thick in most places. Lots and lots of logging roads to be explored and if you have a quad you'll be golden.
low tide will have them on the beach looking for kelp , There will be a number of hunters camped at mosquito lake and Gray bay.

The north island offers a lot more area to cover, Rennel sound , along the yakoun, daddleman etc. Pay attention to the weather and if there is a break in the rain and the sun pokes thru get out there. I'm in Kelowna right now but will be in Rupert (home) saturday so if you want a map or even to chat about it give me a shout.

This time of year expect the worst conditions an island in the north pacific can endure. Trust me, been there done that, in November

CarverK is off in the bush working till december sometime.
If you want to p.m. me, I can tell you some stuff. Me and a buddy went a couple years ago, both of us never been there before. We were to meet CarverK but he got delayed getting back from vancouver. Was an epic adventure one that is simply etched into some of my fondest memories in my hunting career.
Bring a quad if you can, something you can drive on the beaches.
Like I said, message me, I'll pass on what I can ;)
Oh, and despite experience some of the most ridiculous weather/surf I've ever seen... We had a great time harvesting 5 deer each in the 7 days we were there.
Yer gonna get soaked any way you slice it so be prepared on all fronts

When do these deer rut..........anybody know?

I think december.
The QCI deer are Sitka black tails. The smallest of the mule deer. I'd love to go with you but I'm not free for such a trip till february.
If you are looking for the Mule deer trifecta, being sitka, blacktail and mule deer, QCI for sitka, van isl or pemberton/lilloet for some real nice blacktails and of course the interior mulies. ;)
