Blast from the past!

Back to our regularly scheduled program…

The reason that the US chose the M14 over the FN FAL? Politics - the FAL wasn't a US design, so could not possibly win. Had the US moved quickly, they could have ended the Korean War with the T48 FAL in hand. Indeed, in its shorter variants with 16" and 18" Barrels, the FAL could have capably served US forces throughout the 1960s during the early years of the Vietnam War. Rather than the paltry 6 years that the US Army got out of the M14 as its general-issue service rifle, the T48 FAL could have soldiered with the US during two wars from 1953 to as late as 1965 (or even later), rendering a much more reasonable 12 or more years of general service instead....

Joking aside? I don't understand the fixation on the M14. The design was obsolete before it even entered service. The FAL, G3 and AR10 were all superior designs TBH. The Beretta BM59 was a modified M1 Garand, yet proved to be superior to the M14 in just about every regard. So why all the love for the M14???

Bartok, no disrespect, but the M14 has turned out to be a hugely popular rifle.
Maybe you FN FAL fans could start your own”Right Arm of the free world” thread? Because this thread is devoted to the M14, BM59 & M1 Garand rifles.

Oh, I am well aware of the M14's popularity. Up here it was the affordable .308 semi-auto thanks to $500 Norinco clones. Down South, I believe it is more a matter of nostalgia for a bygone era. There is no need for a dedicated FAL thread, as there is an entire website called the FalFiles. But I digress. My sincere apologies for injecting off-topic FAL content into your M14 Thread. By way of penance here are some pics of my tuned Norinco M305 and my beloved BM59....
