Blaze Orange in Saskatchewan

My boys are getting bigger and I went to find some larger blaze orange coveralls for them. Looked in Canadian Tire, WalMart, Marks Work Wearhouse, Peavy Mart and Wholesale Sports. No luck anywhere. Not even toques. I did find a couple of pairs of insulated blaze orange bibs and jackets for much $$$$. That option is not feasible at the moment. These boys can eat like the dickens! Besides they are still growing so the insulated bibs/jacket would not be of use to them for long. For now, coveralls is the option that stretches the family dollar.

I did find all kinds of camo blaze orange or straight camo.

I have also been watching hunting videos (moose, elk, deer) from BC and Alberta on YouTube (great way to spend my lunch hour at work). I have not seen hunters in these videos wear anything but strait camo. Has there been any lobbying to allow straight camo in Saskatchewan?

Any suggestions on a Canadian choice for blaze orange coveralls would be appreciated.

This time of the year finding "colours" is a real challenge. Do you know that the colours (scarlet, blaze, yellow and white or any combination) need only be for the upper body though vests are not acceptable? You might find some appropriate shell in the right colours easier to come by. C Tire here in Regina had some last week but I haven't checked recently

As mentioned above could try bass pro, I know here (at their shop in Vaughan) there's already a lot of sales on their clothing(clearing stock I guess), and I'm sure more to come.

I know you want coveralls but could always just wear normal ones and then toss the orange above if you don't have any luck finding what you want.

Such as this or something similar. Not too pricy, just throw it on top.

Well, I'm a large man (6'2", 335lbs.) and I combed through the local Bass Pro, Le Barons, etc..and NOTHING my size. I ended-up buying one of these from Cabela's in 4XL

Now, I typically wear a 5XL coat, so I was worried this would be too small~NO problems at all. Fits over that thing no problem. Not a bad price, and pretty warm too. It's an unlined jacket, but could be worn on it's own..over a shirt in slightly warmer weather.

For what it is worth, you can order coveralls through Mark's. I've used this option before to get logos printed on an order coveralls.

Other options: Check Princess Auto, Giant Tiger, Value Village, liquidation world. As long as you can find blaze orange headwear (or scarlet red / bright yellow), you can bleach and/or dye coveralls to your heart's content. Safety supply places like Acklands or Commercial Solutions may be able to source blaze orange shirts that can go over other clothing. Since we only have to cover the torso, the shirt option is potentially cheaper.

I'm sure you are aware that vests are not legal in Saskatchewan, despite what some others have suggested. There have been some citations issued for this already this season from the COs I've spoken with. Mostly its a problem with out of province hunters not fully understanding the regulations.

For kids, long sleeve white cotton t-shirts a couple sizes too big will serve as good hunting garments.

My second set of hunting colours was about 5yds of blaze orange fabric and a yellow rubber raincoat as a pattern. Lay the raincoat on the fabric, cut with scissors and single seam sew up the body. The arms and shoulders were a bit tougher, but basically the sleeve is a cone sewn on an angle. A couple of flat pockets for stuff you'll need throughout the day. The pants were easier. Two slits to get into the pants pockets, a flat outside cargo pocket for my map and belt loops.

I'm not a very skilled seam-ster, but I must have done something right because those colours lasted a decade of three or four hunts a year.

Thanks everyone for all the help. Griffin86 thanks for the heads up about looking in Tisdale and Melfort.

JustBen I really like your idea the other locations to check out. I will check all of those out when I get down to Saskatoon. I should be able to find something at one of those places.

Maple leaf eh - another great idea. My wife sews pretty good (well, way better than I ever will be able to) and could easily make up some jackets that way.

White tyveck painters coveralls over whatever suits you for winter clothes. Cheap, if temporary solution.

It's not like Sk. is crawling with morons shooting at flashes of white, now, is it?

Wear a red hat. Good to go.

Cheers

It still is, Charlie38. White is one of the approved colours meeting the "high visibility" requirement, but not allowed for the hat. And you don't have to wear high visibility colour on the lower body anymore (since the Sask. Party was elected in 2007) but you can, so coveralls meet the spec.

No clothing specifications for coyote hunting - shorts and flip-flops are fine as far as that goes, except if you are out hunting them during a big game season - then I think you have to dress as per the regulations even if are hunting something else, or if you are not actually hunting but only accompanying people who are.
