Blaze Orange Vest

I wasn't considering a MOLLE vest, I was more thinking of a vest with fixed pouches specific to the type of hunter, ie deer vest, duck hunter etc...I am a MOLLE fan however and would certainly build one with the required pouches. Now that the noise issue has been brought up, I was thinking of a 500D as a base for strength with a fleece/fleece like material sewn over that (or whatever it is that is used for you guys to keep it quiet) for the noise. the PALS webbing could be sewn over that. Thoughts?

A MOLLE design would be more ideal as the user can customize it for the type of hunting that he will be doing at a given time. How does 500D react to the cold weather? Does it stiffen up and effect mobility? How is it weight wise? Could a softer/lighter level be used and still have a reliable strength/durabilty?

I think waterproof cordura would be ideal in hindsight. Fastex buckles, hydration bladder carrier and waist and chest straps would be ideal. When our gang hunt moose, we are generally gone for the full day, with a couple of us spending 2-3 days/nights away from camp. We either stay on the islands or on top of a mountain for a night or 2, hence the 2-3 day capacity. If a rifle carrier can be built into it (sometimes we need both hands free to ascend the mountain), all the better but definitely not a deal breaker.

For a big game or bird vest, step out of the tactical, carry crap mindset. NO MOLLE.... it is next to useless in the deer woods. Guys that show up with huge bags of stuff to carry around are just not comfortable in the woods yet. We all worry about losing our way, because it CAN happen and you should always be prepared for an unexpected overnight, but paranoia isn't the answer. A perfect big game vest would consist of 2 front bellows pockets with zippers to hold a spare compass, a lighter, waterproof matches and pick your choice of tinder, a small lockback folder and sharpener, a few granola bars, some water purification tabs, a few bandaids, a whistle and of you like, an emergency blanket, and don't forget 20 feet of thin quality nylon cord and your spare magazine, oh and some throat lozenges if your a dogger. A rear game bag is great as it allows the vest to double for upland, and makes for an easy storage solution for a 500ml water bottle. Slap a couple of shotshell carrier on each side, and make sure the front has a zipper and your golden. Padded neck yoke is a nice touch too. Cordura for the doggers, fleece for the guys who like to still hunt, or sit watches. I myself use a waterproof blaze shell, with just a small fanny pack to carry my things, but have an old columbia vest that is very much as described above!

I would rather not wear orange, I think its stupid and makes you a target for both hunters and anti hunters. Half the continent doesnt wear blaze orange and some places without it have the same or lower accident rates.

So why bother dress up like a stupid pumpkin.

I agree but it's the law in Bantario.

I don't know about you but I hike into the mountains for 2-3 days at a time. I'm usually 30-40 km from camp. I'm not paranoid. I'm the "get away from it" type of hunter. I still hunt and sit on ridges for a day or so. I'm not the "tactical" but practical hunter. Molle allows me to tailor my packs to the type hunting/terrain without investing a ton of money into different types of back packs. One main bag for many different types of hunts. YMMV.

I dont agree. Several times a year we have stories on this board of guys getting scoped. Its almost always guys not wearing orange. Its very rare that theirs a story of a guy in orange getting scoped.

:D I agree, but then I live in Alberta, we stopped wearing orange several decades ago :D

I am starting to believe the idiots that shoot at other hunters are those who snap shoot at movement and whether your orange or brown youll get shot all the same.

If the colour was responsible for a huge decrease in deaths, why is it that half the continent doesnt have a higher accident rate when hunting when these places dont use blaze?

Furthermore why is that we can Turkey Hunt and Waterfowl and even some small game in relative safety (outside big game season) and not wear blaze orange?

I think Blaze orange takes the responsibility out of shooting. Its like saying we are all to incompetent not to shoot our fellow hunter unless he dressed like a dayglo pumpkin.

I don't see the big deal over blaze... I would probably wear it even if it weren't mandatory. We hunt in gangs in an organized camp, it helps pick out the doggers in the bush and the watchers on stand. The guys used to wear red coveralls before blaze was mandatory. It just makes sense in our circumstances. Whatever works, and is legal in your jurisdiction!

But if you depend on blaze orange to identify your hunting buddies what's stopping you from shooting a hiker? I think it's a safety item that is rather unsafe for anyone not hunting because it takes away the responsibility to identify your target.

"Human wearing orange" is a species tag I'm unfamilliar with! :p
If wearing orange makes other hunters scope you then I'm curious of what would happen without it. Maybe nothing happen because they would never see you at all? :yingyang:

Accident rates are a function of hunter density (and therefore 'interaction' of the bad kind- assuming an equal distribution of hunting idiots). There definitely is less huntable land and more people in eastern Canada than in the west.

Turkey and waterfowl exemptions make sense considering how those hunts are conducted. Not many guys shooting geese on the ground in thick cover....

No matter what colour of clothes people wear, the responsibility to know your target and beyond never magically disappears. Orange may not cure idiocy, but it sure doesn't cause it either.

But if you depend on blaze orange to identify your hunting buddies what's stopping you from shooting a hiker? I think it's a safety item that is rather unsafe for anyone not hunting because it takes away the responsibility to identify your target.

No it doesn't! Orange helps you by easily eliminating *some* of the things in the bush when you are hunting. The four rules of firearms apply no matter what hunting regulations exist. Full stop. No wiggle room.

Sure I enjoy having the option of wearing whatever I want here in BC, but regs mandating orange aren't an insult to my intelligence or a trick to make me shoot some poor guy in drab clothes- they are one more tool that I can take advantage of to suit the environment I'm hunting in.

I would hope no one relied on blaze exclusivly, but as another safety measure, I find it useful. Regardless, we are all bound by our specific provincial regs, whatever they may be, and act accordingly.

When I've hunted in areas with a high density of hunters I feel the blaze orange is one step I can take to stop someone from taking a potshot at me. Maybe it just in my head but it makes me feel a little safer having it on.

In my opinion, the majority of Hunters in the provinces that require orange, would not pay more than $10 for a blaze vest. They will just buy the cheapest one at wal-mart.

I disagree. Most of the vests I see are good vests with a price tag of $40+.

The guys not willing to put out the bucks for a good vest usually own 3 in 1 parkas with a shell (more "bang for the buck" type attitude).

I would like to see something simple yet functional...perhaps some shotgun shell holders, center fire cartridge holders, a pocket for a GPS, and one pocket big enough to hold a pair of gloves and a toque. A detachable bird/bunny pocket on the back would be a plus as well.
