Blending powder , have you?

Was just thinking the other day about blending different powders to either achieve different burn rates or if supply has dried up on something or whatever the reason something may not be available.

We know some of the manufacturers do and have "secret formulas" that are blends, so what is stopping us from out own tests and tribulations?

I'm not talking about using Retumbo in a 7.62 x 39 , but powder that is suitable for your cartridge.

Of course you wouldn't mix a ball with long extruded type of powder as this wouldn't meter very well and I would think you would have to mix/blend based on volume and not weight.

Any thoughts on this?

I am of the opinion “what could possibly go wrong” myself.

I have 3/4lb of accidentally mixed pouder, 25% 3031 and 75% 4831. I put a big label on it. Put in front of the pouder shelf to remind myself to pay more attention!

I'm not actually planning to do it , just thinking about the process of and if anyone has had knowledge of it other than what I have read before.

This is the same situation we run into with the illicit Fentanyl market. There is not good was for a shade tree powder blender (or backyard chemist) to ensure that the blend is consistent. The analogy that we use is chocolate chip cookies. Some are loaded with chips and some a little sparse. But with Fentanyl (and potentially with gunpowder) an excess of "chocolate chips" can kill you.

I agree with mixing different batches of the same powder, as long as the batches are not expired.

But mixing/blending different types of powders is false economy or an accident waiting to happen.

I’d leave blending to scotch distilleries, tobacco companies and Starbucks.

In the case of Fentanyl it would be problem solved. I get sick & tired of hearing about the $$$$$$$ spent on addicts while people who are ill through no fault of their own wait months for treatment.

Well I'll entertain a slight divergence from the topic. Not sure how much experience you have with high-powered opiates, but a majority of people who are prescribed the strong stuff post-op end up dependant on them. When the prescriptions run out hey either choose to, a) ride out opioid detox, or, b) find a substitute that keeps them from feeling sick. Opioid detox is a horrendous in to behold so I understand how people make the other choice. People end up on opioids every day "through no fault of their own", often following serious injuries in motor vehicle accidents or following treatment for cancer (and a host of other reasons).

I used to be intolerant of people with addiction issues but, after a great many years dealing with them, I came to realize that there is more at play than just bad decision making. And it's worth keeping in mind the phrase..."There, but for the grace of God, go I".

I think some are getting excited here, I never said I was going to mix Retumbo with Titegroup for poops and giggles to see what it does in a 50 BMG.

I had a legit question and I know that I have read that in the past that it was done for some reason or another.

I have been reloading since 8 p.m. last night I know what I'm doing. ;)

Some are just wound a little too tight.

Some hard working good people get hurt and end up hooked on the drugs they are prescribed because it is the only way to ease the suffering. Obviously you have no experience with someone going through this and I hope you can keep it that way.

How did this go from

"I have a question about reloading powder"

Too

"Fentanyll is the devil!! Damn addicts!"

But seriously Kelly Timoffee, I wouldn't do it. I just don't have the experience necessary, or the resources to make consistent mixes if I did get it right.

Not saying it can't be done, because big companies Do, just look at Hornady Superformance powder. I'm saying WE probably shouldn't in our basements/garages unless you have a well stocked lab at home.

Just a quest for knowledge my friend, same as the large Hadron collider , very interesting, amazing technology , groundbreaking research but in no way shape or form am I going to start splitting and colliding atoms in my back yard!!

You all thought blending powder was dangerous! ;)
