Bless me Father, for I have sinned...I bought Sako Quick-detachable rings & bases...

I broke down and decided to scope my Sako 85 Bavarian Carbine safe queen, however, I wanted "quick release" as I enjoy using the iron sights.
It just so happened that the gun store I frequent ordered, by accident, an extra set as part of a special order for one of their customers (ironically, for his Sako Bavarian Carbine). And they were eager to move them.
I just happened to be looking for rings and bases for my Sako... and dear god did those things look nice. No denying quality when you see it.

Unfortunately, at almost $400 (with taxes), it's going to hurt! Apparently, this is almost "at cost" according to them. I actually asked if that was a mis-print on the price sticker. :)

Please tell me I'm not insane ! :D

BTW, I decided to do things a little differently this time, I ordered the rings first, and then I will find a quality scope that fits. Any suggestions? (1 inch tube)

Makes sense to me. Quality mounts, perfect fit and finish to match your rifle, perfect return to zero every time. I tried to order some for one of my Sakos and the dealer I talked to actually refused to try to order them for me, said they were too expensive!! Buy what you want, you will be happy.
 
I'm afraid that you are insane :)

I might be mistaken, but can't you mount talley bases and rings on the rifle, and just ignore the integral bases? Even if you were drilling and tapping you'd still only spend 1/3 of that for the whole setup... maybe 1/2 at most if the drilling/tapping is expensive.
 
You have to make your own choices in these matters.
But there is no way on this earth that I would pay $400.00 for mounts, QD or not!!
I say that because there are a number of very reliable, return to zero, QD mounts for under ½ of that price.
I feel we get dinged pretty hard when it comes to many firearms related items that originate in Europe.
However, the bottom line is the first line of my post. :D

Talley's were my second choice. In the end, however, I actually found Sako QD rings and bases that I could handle first! I'm tired of ordering accessories online and sometimes finding disappointment.

I have Talley's on my custom small-ring Mauser 98, and they are excellent.

Yeah, I spent too much on rings/bases, but when I look back over the past three years on what I spent on firearms, ammo, memberships, reloading equipment, optics, accessories, etc, and the losses I took on selling mildly used or NIB firearms that I didn't want (as I like to experiment), this amount of money is a proverbial drop in the bucket. Who ever said shooting was a low cost hobby? :)

I forgive you my son, now go and shoot that rifle and don't just store it in the safe! I as well have a Sako Bavarian that is equiped with Sako rings.......great quality!

You make good points, but spending that kind of money on rings and bases now makes it a requirement that you have to shoot it... lots! I'm sure it won't disappoint. For myself, I just went with the warne bases and rings for a quick detach setup, only shot it once so far but no complaints yet.

I hope to find time over the next few months giving her a go at my local gun club. She will have some serious competition from my custom small-ring 98 sporter.
 
I used Talley QR on my Bavarian Carbine and really like them.
I'd suggest you send yours back and get 2 sets of Talleys.......then buy another Sako. :p ---Just kidding.
Enjoy your new rig..congrats!..those mounts will serve you well for your lifetime and beyond.
 
I have 1 set of the quick-release Sako optilock's, they are really nice. I have considered ordering a couple more sets, but the price is so high, I haven't bit the bullet yet. They are discontinued, so they are hard to find. I know where I can get 2 sets, right now, but still can't do it.
They claim, that the scope can be removed and reinstalled with no change in the rifles zero. I have tried it several times, and they are correct. Always hits the same.

As long as your regular optilock bases are installed properly, a quarter turn on the retaining bolt with a allen key, or torx key, and they quickly release and work just like the quick releases. Only difference is you need one tool. This is the main reason I have held off on the additional sets of quick releases.
