Took a chum out yesterday for a wolf / coyote hunt - he has never done it before. Snowshoed in and set up on a powerline across from an old slash road near our municipal dump where I know there have been a couple of wolves hanging around.

Got the call set up, settled in with our white camo outfits and hit the caller to start the "dying rabbit" sequence. Told him to watch if the crows and ravens started to come as they will follow the predators.

45 seconds, didnt have my rifle in my hands, still standing against a tree

He says - here comes the birds - there's one - I say one what - he says black wolf standing in the slash road. By the time I grabbed the rifle it walked into the bush and never came back out. Never had action that fast before

Hard lesson relearned - never go hunting without your gun.......... :p

Been there, done that! First time calling coyotes, I must have been within 50 yards or less of a bedded yote. It took about 3 seconds and he was 6 yards away, and me with the gun leaning against the tree beside me.

Hunted Coyotes with a call for first time on Tuesday. First set up we had one come in hard. Had my kids along 8 and 10 and they got so excited it saw us and took off before we could get him...too funny.

I love it when something works for the first time.

An old fellow once told me "if you don't learn something new from every hunt you, then you are doing something wrong".

I'm sure you'll get that wolf next time 'round.

If you want a wolf to step out or come back out let out a good howl. I did this one time and got 3 of them to step back out in the open where I was able to put one on the ground.

It works to bring them in from a distace too.

Back out this morning in a new spot with 4 of us hunting - beautiful spot, no wind, mild and tracks everywhere. One of the guys saw 12 there 2 days ago but they didnt show up this morning.

So we hop in the truck and head northbound on the trans Canada and about 10 miles later one runs across the road and stands in the ditch. One guy bails out and hops into the ditch - wolf standing there - but he left his ammo in the truck. wolf saunters into the bush.

Theres a bush road 25 yards up - tell the guy in the ditch to hustle up there and watch the cutover. We grab gear, guns, caller and head up to the bush road. In the snow on the unploughed road is the 401 of wolf trails - wide enough to walk on and packed enough to walk on without snowshoes.

The three of us start up the road and no sign of our fourth - he was just supposed to watch the road. One of the guys says - hey look a raven just flew up behind that ridge - watch to see if a wolf comes out.

No sooner said when a big tawny wolf runs up on the cutover ridge and stops about 200 yards away - looking back at us. i get the scope on him, one guy is saying "shoot" and the other says "wheres Ben???" Since I dont know where our fourth guy is I dont pull the trigger and it walks over the ridge. turns out there were two more in the ravine on the other side of the ridge based on the tracks when we got up there a few minutes later.

Anyways - Ben comes out of the bush on my right side - turns out I could have shot but seeing as I didnt know where he was - I would rather pass on the shot than take a chance of having an accident.

Back out tomorrow for another try.

Isn't shooting from a highway illegal in Ontario?

He was off the highway trying to get a shot towards the bush - we are north of the area where possession of a firearm in the right of way is prohibited

Loaded firearms in hunting areas

17. (1) A person who is in an area usually inhabited by wildlife or who is on the way to or from an area usually inhabited by wildlife shall not,

(e) in a part of Ontario to which clause (d) does not apply, discharge a firearm in or across the travelled portion of a right of way for public vehicular traffic.

I am not familiar with this particular law affecting northern ontario.
Whats the cut off point for this? Does it mean, you can shoot across the road. P.M. me if you feel this hijacks the thread. Thanks

Is it different than HTA def, highway is road from fence line to fence line and roadway is travelled portion of highway?

No - you cant shoot across the road:
