Blew it on a wolf - Season 10!

Simply put the wolf hunting is very slow - other than one walking out 2 doors down, wandering by my neighbours as they were talking at the end of the driveway, where it veered, came up my driveway, sniffed around (I had left earlier with the baitmobile with a wolf carcass in it), and then proceeded to walk around downtown. We are only seeing one wolf on the hydro line (and it appears to have mange), and little wolf activity north of town either.

Coyotes are everywhere - in town, out of town, at all times of day. Despite our efforts at the snow dump and golf course, we havent had them show up or howl back at us. Last time at the golf course I heard a raven squawking like hell and sure enough it was flying above a lynx that walked up to the tree the caller was sitting in, before proceeding down the trees at the edge of the fairway.

Early in the morning of Dec 23, a transport carrying a load of live cattle went off the highway north of town - luckily the driver wasnt hurt but about 20 or so cattle were killed or put down at the site. The rest fled into the bush, right where another hunter has been baiting for wolves with lots of wolf tracks. Then the #### show started with folks flocking to the scene from as far away as 150 km and shooting cows. My wife and I drove up on Christmas eve and it was quite something, a log truck with a cherry picker on it loading the dead and frozen cattle that were stacked like cordwood on the side of the highway. People with orange vests dragging cows out of the bush to the side of the highway and loading on trailers and trucks. I found out there were at least 4 left alive and My72Jeep drove up to check it out but it was too much of a wild show for him to get out of the truck.

On Boxing day, M72J, his wife (M72JW) and I drove up at first light to see if the wolves had found the gut piles, but there were 5 guys and a skidoo there looking for cows. We drove north to the blind and low and behold, there was a very fresh wolf track walking into our baitsite. Beautiful morning, no wind, mild so we set up in the blind for a while and called but nothing came out.

Then we drove back and stopped at the scene of the carnage and picked up some bait!. You can see gutpiles on the bush road behind M72J!

That afternoon, Gunner410, Paddle2DaC (who was home ona surprise visit) and I went out to the hydro line - sunny, warm and no wind. I started with coyote howls and immediately had a pack response in the distance. Tried some more howls, they responded and then one started barking, yipping and howling right behind us - sounded less than 100 yards away. It was across the road where M72J and M72JW usually set up (but M72J decided to have an afternoon nap and they didnt come out). This thing was really ticked off and raising hell and Gunner410 and I turned around as we expected it to come running down the road and up the ridge to us. After 5 minutes of chewing us out, it went silent and we didnt hear from it. About that time, Paddle2DAC spotted a coyote crossing the hydro line on the other side of the road into the side where the other coyote had been barking at us. If M72J and M72JW had been there they would have had a shot at it.

After a minute or so I play another howl and now the pack that we heard earlier starts responding - and they are very close. The howls and yips were coming from the same general location where the coyote had crossed a minute or so earlier, so Gunner made his way down the ridge, across the road and set up where M72JW usually sits. The coyotes continued to howl at us for a bit longer and then went quiet.

Now we were down to about 15 minutes of legal shooting light left. I turned around and watched the hydro line and since all of the animals had gone silent, I didnt play any more calls. After a couple of minutes, a coyote walks across the line in front of me about 200 yards down. But I lost him in the grass and raspberry canes (until last night / today, we have had virtually no snow and the grass is still standing quite tall). I told Paddle2DAC I lost him in the grass, and he started looking with his binos. I found him at the edge of the treeline and took a hurried shot as he was disappearing from view. It spun and ran back out to the center of the line where he started running away from us. Fired a second shot and big puff of snow next to him, and he is now in high gear. Tried a 400 yard hail Mary but to no avail.

Most exiting coyote hunt we have ever had even though we didnt get anything. With the lack of wolves this year, the coyotes seem to be ranging further out of town and that is the first time we have ever had coyotes howl like that at the hydro line.

Next morning, M72J and M72JW went out and found where someone had dumped a truck load of cowhides. M72J went and got his tractor, and M72JW and I went up in the truck. We met him coming down the main road and were stopped talking to him when a coyote walked out of the treeline, ran towards us and then into the bush on the other side. Even with the diesel tractor chugging away it didnt seem the least concerned. We were only 50 yards from a hydro line so M72JW and I set up and tried to call it after M72J left, but it didnt show up.

Only a couple more days to use up the 2018 tags and then start on the 2019 tags next week.

Happy New Years!

Happy New Years!

Best of luck, enjoy the stories, too bad about not being able to transfer the tags to the New Year... Keep the stories coming

So tonight we went out tonight (it was -30 this AM) to the hydro line and I sat down and was looking at the FoxPro handset deciding what coyote call to start with when a wolf started howling down in front of me. After a couple of minutes a pack of 3-4 wolves started howling from the far ridgeline. I played a howl and they called back.

I texted M72J to have his wife come up and sit with me as they were down in front of me and if they came out i wanted her to take a shot. The next howls were much c!oser and sounded that they were in the log landing next to the hydro line. After 10 minutes of silence I played a snowshoe distress call and they howled to it. They had close the distance and sounded within 200 yards of where we were sitting.

Once again we ran out of light and pulled out for the night. It's funny how you learn something new every time - if we ever run into this again where they start howling from the ridge we will likely slip down into the log landing as I am sure when we go in tomorrow morning we will find their tracks in the landing. What is also interesting is that all of our activity this year is in the late afternoon and not the morning as in all the previous years.

Have been trying to get these two for some time now. Tried baiting them last week with rotted beaver carcases. We waited until we could not see the cross hairs and we were half froze and they did not show. Went back in the am and they had taken the bait. Hard to get them to play ball in the day light. It is a game, and their very good at playing it, better than I so far anyways. The barrel stand is left over from the fall deer feeding. These two always swing by for a look see, but very rarely in day light.

Chas took a few days off to celebrate New Years so my wife an I took up the slack.
We spent an hour out Monday Dec 31 (4-5) and saw nadda. We decided not to go out this am as at 7am it was -32c. Finally around noon it had warmed up to -19 and we went out. we went out to the power line we hunt saw lots of new tracks. We decided to look over an area I was thinking of baiting again south ofthe line, we were amazed by the amount of fresh tracks we saw (it snowed last night) when a wolf comes walking down the trail, sees my wife and cuts into the woods.we hunker down to see if it will try to circle around, sure enough 10 minuets later I see it skirting the tree line to my left. I tried signaling my wife to where it was but I was lost in the afternoon sun. I lost it in the scrub from last years logging for a bit, then found it about 60 yards out. I lined the 40 cal. JR up on it and bam. It ran twenty feet started walking sat down and died. Now I need to be very choosy about my next shot as it’s 364 days till next season.

Just an FYI.....manitou land island ...one can go for coyotes any time one wants .....just have to get land owners permission.....and no tags needed .....
I put an add in the manitouland island expositor ......! Jesus h chhhhhhh
I had people calling me ...my phone did not stop ringing ......
I had filled 3!! Sheets of paper with names and property to hunt on !!!!
There was and still is an information day on hunting coyotes...a town on the island put on to get people up there to hunt them
That’s how many there are ....I #### you not !!!
They said if you killed 75% of the population for 3 years in a row it still would not effect the coyote population on the island
This was said from a retired game warden and the present ones that patrol the island ...which I personally know !!!
Christ almighty...this thing called work is a pain in the arse .....gotta support the welfare bums with my taxes
Got all the gear ...but no time to go ....
I’m just waiting to bless the almighty almighty.220 swift and the 6.5 creedmore on a coyote and wolf on the island ....
You be surprised how nice people are on manitouland island. ...and will let you go hunt for coyotes on there property

Anyone offering accommodations in exchange for some population control? Between the drive and the fun, I'd need at least a few days.

Chas took a few days off to celebrate New Years so my wife an I took up the slack.

Sigh.. Go to camp for new years and get a text saying I may of got the first coyote with my JR carbine but he got the first wolf with his.

Congratulations bud!

PS - he only is being cautious for the rest of the year as his wife told him what she will do to him if he kills another one of "her" wolves :)

Sooooo to keep a long story short, I decided to put a bait out in the area where I shot the wolf New Year’s Day. As I was getting ready Chas calls asking where am I as he’s at my place. I tell him I’m out at the line, he says hang on he’s on the way. We chat for a bit then I get ready to head in through the town dump as it’s a shorter walk. As Chas drives away he reminds me I can’t take the gun through the dump. DAM. As I’m walking in dragging a sled full of bait Chas call me to say he just followed a wolf full of mange down the road. I hang up walk 5 feet look up and there is a nice big gray/black wolf standing on the trail looking at me. In a way I glad I didn’t have my gun, as it’s a long way to Jan 1 2020.

In this part of Ontario we only get two wolf/yote tags per year, and if I shoot two in first week of January I’m done, unless I wish to drive to areas of Provence with out limits.
