Well we are winding down on a season that started with a bang but has been disappointing overall. The season closes at the end of the month...
Last Thursday evening, Paddle2DaC and I were out on the east side of the hydro line trying for an hour or so before sundown. After about 40 minutes, P2DC starts pointing to the treeline on his side of the hydro line (I was on the opposite side). I hadnt heard anything, but what the heck, my wife tells me I am deaf. I kept watching and tried a coyote ##### in heat call. P2DC was intently watching the treeline right next to where he was sitting. When we got up to leave, he showed me the following picture that was sent to his cell phone from a trail camera he has set up approximately 70 yards in the trees from where he was sitting. Nice looking wolf but never showed itself.
I was working Saturday when he sent these pictures from another trail camera on the west side of the hydro line (most wolf activity we have seen all season other than mangy Mike). Hard to tell from the low photo resolution, but almost looks like there is a broken snare around its neck.
I went out this morning and set up on the west side of the line - you could see a definite trail where the wolf was crossing and sinking in the sow as it softened up later in the day. Called on and off for an hour but no joy.
I went up the highway to the beaver flood to check the camera and blind. We havent hunted there this winter as the snow plowing hasnt left a safe shoulder to park on and with the transports on the highway, dont want to have our vehicles hit. With the receding snow banks, was able to get the truck off the traveled portion of the road. In 6 weeks of being set, the camera had lots of fox pictures, but only 2 sets of wolf pictures. This is pretty disappointing as we used to have a pack of wolves that regularly showed up there. Sorry about the big pictures, I resized them multiple times on IMGUR, but they are still coming out too big:
Lots of lynx pictures - this one looks pretty healthy considering that most of them are starving. Notice how it likes to rub against the dead tree.
Well a few more days to go,we may still tag one yet.
