Blew it on a wolf - Season 14

Glad to your back again this year. I always enjoy your stories and nice pictures. No coyotes in my area but we have a good supply of Timber wolves. I also enjoy being out smarted and harassed by them, there definitely a challenge. Got a couple last year, none so far this year. I am trying to lull them into a false sense of security, its not working thus far.

Went out this morning to the golf course with Paddle2DaC, thought it was spring, -5C, little snow, no wind, unfortunately nothing showed up.

Around Christmas, another hunter shot a wolf not far from where we hunt on the hydro line. He took it to a local trapper to get it skinned, but he wouldnt do it because the wolf had manage. This isnt something we have seen for a few years in wolves, but it looks like its back. This one showed up same day when / where I called the lynx in, and he obviously is infested. This is no more than 1/2 mile from where the other mangy wolf was shot.

Interestingly, have been getting interment pictures of a healthy wolf at the same spot, he showed up this morning and the mangy one kept running it off. The healthy animal certainly seems to be submissive to the manged wolf:

You can see the other wolf at the top centre of the picture.

Really sucks to see mange back because we are not seeing many wolves in the area, certainly not like when I started hunting them here in 2009.. I hunted the hydro line around 10:00 AM but neither of these came out to the calls.

My72Jeep and I went up the highway and I got bait out at the blind at the beaver flood. Highway contractor isnt winging the snow banks back and cant park on thee side of the highway with a full sized pickup truck. Not sure how we will hunt it but will figure out a way.

Hasnt been many updates because we have very few animals around this year. Nothing at our usual spots and nothing coming out to the calls, other than lynx which are starving - the snowshoe hare population crashed about this time 2 years ago.

Big dump of snow yesterday so went out to the hydro line this morning. Fresh tracks on the hydro line of 3 possibly 4 wolves. First time have seen a group of tracks since December. Sat and called for an hour but nothing showed. My Fratari style picture with no arrows on it :)

Pulled my camera where we had placed some road killed moose, two lynx fed regularly - typical cats, not concerned about anything other than themselves:

The manged wolf we call Mangy Mike is still alive, probably due to the fact that we have had a very mild winter. We unsuccessfully attempted to get MNR approval to kill it without using a tag, but since they dont have a policy to authorize dispatch of ill or injured animals, they said to get a trapper to trap it or get a CO to shoot it f:P: The lynx wasnt too keen on letting it near their food source:

Sorry about large picture sizes, IMGUR is acting up and after multiple resizing attempts and saving them, still get large pictures

Walked out this afternoon to put the camera back - as I came over the crest on the left side of the groomed snow mobile trail - there was a coyote about 80 yards away - but it was on the other side of the trail. It was about 20 yards out from the treeline (would be the treeline you can see behind the above wolf / lynx pictures) and just standing there up to its chest in the snow.

Cant shoot across the maintained trail, so started to back up to get behind the crest so I could cross over, but it either saw the movement or winded me (there was a strong wind from me to it) and turned to go back to the treeline. It walked slowly and I woofed at it 3 times, but no joy - just walked out of sight. I didnt have any calls with me but I snuck up to the hydro poles and sat for 20 minutes, but it never showed itself again.

Well we are winding down on a season that started with a bang but has been disappointing overall. The season closes at the end of the month...

Last Thursday evening, Paddle2DaC and I were out on the east side of the hydro line trying for an hour or so before sundown. After about 40 minutes, P2DC starts pointing to the treeline on his side of the hydro line (I was on the opposite side). I hadnt heard anything, but what the heck, my wife tells me I am deaf. I kept watching and tried a coyote ##### in heat call. P2DC was intently watching the treeline right next to where he was sitting. When we got up to leave, he showed me the following picture that was sent to his cell phone from a trail camera he has set up approximately 70 yards in the trees from where he was sitting. Nice looking wolf but never showed itself.

I was working Saturday when he sent these pictures from another trail camera on the west side of the hydro line (most wolf activity we have seen all season other than mangy Mike). Hard to tell from the low photo resolution, but almost looks like there is a broken snare around its neck.

I went out this morning and set up on the west side of the line - you could see a definite trail where the wolf was crossing and sinking in the sow as it softened up later in the day. Called on and off for an hour but no joy.

I went up the highway to the beaver flood to check the camera and blind. We havent hunted there this winter as the snow plowing hasnt left a safe shoulder to park on and with the transports on the highway, dont want to have our vehicles hit. With the receding snow banks, was able to get the truck off the traveled portion of the road. In 6 weeks of being set, the camera had lots of fox pictures, but only 2 sets of wolf pictures. This is pretty disappointing as we used to have a pack of wolves that regularly showed up there. Sorry about the big pictures, I resized them multiple times on IMGUR, but they are still coming out too big:

Lots of lynx pictures - this one looks pretty healthy considering that most of them are starving. Notice how it likes to rub against the dead tree.

A good friend of mine in NE Ontario is an avid wolf hunter. He punched this one earlier this week. Said he was old, teeth were worn right down. Figured he bumped him off the bait pile when he drove in on his sled to add more bait. Said there was fresh tracks and he could see Ravens buzzing him as he moved along in the bush so he put his snow shoes on and went after him. Three hundred yards into the bush he spotted him and got a shot off. The 7mm STW knocked his lights out.
