You may have seen my previous posts about Gunner410 and my hunting experiences while wolf hunting since 2009 along the north shore of Lake Superior, and how it usually works out in the wolfs favour. Well, here we go again for another season.......

Well so far, things have been rather slow, and and mild temperatures and very little snow until yesterday. I have seen an increase in wolves seen and track numbers which would indicate that the population is a bit better but still way down compared to when we started 6 years ago. Considering we have had back fo back severe winters, it is amazing anything survived. Our moose population is way down as well.

Gunner410 decided to go out with a friend and help set traps, so I decided to go out and try my first wolf hunt of the fall. Set the alpha Dogg and sit and spin decoy out and called with a variety of rabbit in distress calls for an hour on a hydro line. I got up and walked over to the far side of the line to scout for a blind location

I walked back to pick up the caller and the decoy. I bent over and picked up the decoy and as I started to stand up I realized that there was a black wolf standing on the edge of the line looking at me. I was in all white camo and I bent back down and unslung my .22 -250. Once I had it in my hands I stooped up and it was still standing there about 60 yard's away. I shot it in the chest with one of my 55 grain handloads.

It ran into the bush and I packed up my gear and went to look for it. It only went about 50 yards and I found her under a spruce tree. It was a small female and has a beautiful black pepper coat with gray through out. it's a really nice looking pelt.

My wife came out and took some pictures, once I get them off her cell phone I will post pictures.

Great way to start the season...

Went out yesterday morning with My72jeep and went to the exact same spot I shot the wolf. Sometime during the night, a pack of 5 moved through as the tracks were covered in the inch or so of snow that fell early Sunday AM. We called for an hour and then walked back to the main road. When we got there, there was a beautiful cross fox standing on the far side of the road about 100 yards away. We couldn’t shoot and it ran into the bush. We walked down to where the pack had crossed the road and there were 3 fresh tracks in the snow going into the bush between the road and the hydro line – they were heading into where we had been calling. We set up and as I started calling, My72Jeep heard one in the bush to his left, but it never came out.

So it looks like we have lots of critters to play with this winter!

Spent close to 6 hours skinning it yesterday – my hands are sure sore today! Probably took 3 ½ hours to skin out the paws and claws.

^^ Add that to the list of things that will never happen to me lol! Nice going Chas!

Always such great stories and very glad for you that you connected with one. Hoping for several more posts throughout the winter Best of luck

What would that weigh? looks like a young one. I shot a female a few year ago in NW AB that went 85 lbs........jet black with silver tipped guard hairs...........one less deer killer....nice job.....Harold

It wasnt very big - maybe 50 lbs. I think this is the same one we saw on the trail camera at that location last year:

EDIT - so yesterday I had to pick my wife up at the car dealer so we drove out and I ditched the wolf carcass about 50 yrds from where I shot from. Took my wife out today and dropped her off, and seeing as I had a fresh Timmies and hadnt had a lunch break, I decided to drive out and check out the carcass. Crested the ridge (behind me in the picture) with my truck and there was a big tawny wolfing chomping down. It turned and ran into the bush. I drove down and got out and walked over to check out the remains. Got back in my truck and started to drive up to where I could turn around and a hunter stood up. I know him and drove up and we chatted. He had been there for an hour but hadnt seen anything. He never saw the wolf that I saw as it was just over a slight rise from where he was sitting. I apologized for screwing up his hunt (he had his truck hidden and I didnt see it). He was good with it all so I suggested a spot to sit where the wolves cross another trail nearby. Hopefully he will get a crack at him.
