Blew up my AR today. KABOOM!

well in 2013 i went threw 8000rds of it.....about 3000 rounds of fed, 3000 rds of white box and a 1000 AE

no issues....yet

Here's what I've got now.
Shell casing on the left was the one I picked up off the ground. Shell on the right came out of the chamber.
My bolt was not that dirty before this. Some of the damage to the brass was possibly done during bolt removal.

Scary stuff, glad to see you're alright.

I've been shooting through a box of 800 rounds of norc ammo. I've used about 400 now. In that 400 I've had AT LEAST 10 primer strikes where nothing happens. Not "light" primer strikes either, like full-on norc AR firing pin hits, and now t97 hits.. Just "click" and nothing. Only 2 squibs though, but those freak me out! At least they sound "off" enough you know to stop and check.. Your casing looks like it just full on exploded.

Reading this thread has me scared now to finish the rest of the case! (well, I still will, but looks like I'll be getting gloves! and then switching to something with a bit more QC)

damnit I just bought a crate of this stuff.. Knew I should have just ponied up and bought AE

Ill just save it for a tinfoil hat type day then i guess

My god people... this is one round out of how many hundred thousand?

I bet if Rust didn't post this none of you would think twice about shooting your Norinco ammo and won't have any kabooms, but hey now that you're all scared to #### about Norinco ammo why don't you all ship yours to me, I'll dispose of it properly... BY SHOOTING IT.

I do not know enough about the subject, but did I wind up with case head separation?
This image is not mine. But it looks like mine when it came out.
One of the pieces of brass was stuck in the extractor just like this pic.

Given how many tens of thousands of Norinco 5.56 get fired incident free does not make me say Norinco ammo is crap, even though I may be done with it. I'm lucky like that.

Gotta respect the passion in this guy.

My guess is "out of battery discharge".

The base looks like it was expanded circumferentially due to lack of support from the chamber, then the pressure blew out the side.

An AR can not fire out of battery from a mechanical standpoint, and his certainly didn't since the bolt was stuck closed.

Oh and I'll happily pay for the shipping, BTW.

If the round went off without the lugs engaged, a hell of a lot more damage would have occurred. He'd probably be picking the BCG out of his forehead. For sure the rifle would be a pile of twisted junk.

My guess is...it's a Norc...some are good, some are bad, all are cheap. You had bad luck when you acquired the bad Norc. Glad you're ok.

Sure looks like your primer blew put sideways, taking the base of the brass with it... I had one defective Norinco case with no flash hole, that sent the primer back into the bolt face, and wedged everything together pretty tight. Maybe yours was similar, but slightly weaker brass that allowed it to split away and ignite the powder after the case had split? Split at the weakest point of the bolt face, the extractor.

Have you taken any detailed pics of the chamber Mr. Rust? I'm just curious about the cause of the markings on the case you recovered from the rounds that ejected fine and if there is any evidence of an out of spec chamber.

No, the issue is we know norc ammo is crappy, but some of us didn't worry about the crap ammo exploding in our faces until now :)
Just now we have ANOTHER reason to give something else a try.

Given how QC seems to be lacking on this ammo - even before kabooms where a possible worry- the fact that most of us end up having to take home dud rounds each time we shoot norc where the primer is struck but nothing happens (what the heck do you do with them anyway -- the range wont take them) makes it a safe bet to try something with (hopefully) better QC
