I prefer a detachable mag. Anything else and you're picking up cartridges out of the snow and mud and having to clean them(what a tedious job). Even with a hinged floor plate, chances are pretty good that you'll drop 1 or 2 cartridges on the ground some times.

Its super easy to dump the shells into your hand, but I love the option of single feeding them through the top. Pretty hard to find a detachable mag that can do that. If it can, then its of staggered design, and a design I find less than reliable with detachable mags.
Straight line feed that makes a det mag so good, prevents reloading other than after removal. I have had literally dozens of each kind, now all my rifles are either blind mag or internal drop plate mags. (or tube feds!!!)

If you want to single feed the cartridge, just drop it in the chamber. No need to load it into the magazine first.

unless you don't plan on pulling the trigger right away. I meant single feed is a plus for me, as I often come across different species while hunting, and have different loadings in my pockets. (Rt. chest pocket = 200 gr accubonds for bigger stuff, Lt chest Pocket = 150gr GMX bullets. ) Sometimes I just need something else than what I put in the mag. I leave a space for an extra round in the mag incase I need to load something different on top in a hurry.
Thats what I meant by single feed.

I understand now.

On the other hand with a detachable mag system you could just carry a 2nd mag of the other loads in that pocket and just switch mags and have your firearm fully loaded with the desired load.

The deciding factor is the quality of the factory detachable mag. Some are cheap, prone to jams and dont do well with dirt in them or wet. Some do ok.

I would say the deciding factor is more about where and how you hunt. In Ontario, a lot of people prefer the DM because they are hunting smaller parcels and are on/off the quad, in/out of camp, etc.

If you are hunting where you won't see a roadway or fence all day, there is no need to have a DM, as you'd only be unloading once at the end of the day.

A perfectly sensible solution.

detachable for me as well, with more than one backup carried in pouches or in the backpack; if you're THAT clumsy that you lose mags; if you are, put mag-puls or something( even a eyebolt through the bottom) and USE A LANYARD

hey, when i was in the cf, we had kiddie strings on the arctic mittens- not there so you wouldn't lose them, but so you could drop your mitts to use your rifle- the guys in design actually THOUGHT about stuff like that then

What about break actions lol. I use all 3 types mentioned. Detach mags I like for 22s and fun plinking. I see how a detach mag is nice for constant loading and reloading but I've never ran out of shells using a top feed gun either not while actually hunting. Ad when it comes to hinged floor plates my only concern is for heavy recoiling rifles opening the plate and dumping your bullets on the ground. My 223 the design works great but my buddies 458wm he had to bolt it shot as his heavy loads would open it and that was his main rifle in africa. I don't mind racking the action on my stevens 4-5 times to empty it so I voted doesn't matter

I chose the doesn`t matter option. I have used them all, the blind mag is a pain though when you go to unload.

depends on the rifle- some have a button or a HINGED FLOORPLATE that amm you do is push the button or trip the lever , the plate drops and the cartridges drop into your hand- i modified a 98 mauser to do just that in one ofternoon with nothing more than a piece of barstock and a drill, welder( gas) and a NAIL- if the floorpate comes off, you can make it a hinged job

that's b/c the latch wasn't fitted properly- it's a job for a smith- with mine, you have to use the point of a bullet to depress the button, then slide the floorplate forward AS you're depressing the button- works EVERY time

I have a couple of Remington 700s and I have trouble getting rounds into the hinged floor plate, so I installed bottom metal and a detachable magazine.
For the most part if you're emptying your entire mag into game, something is wrong in the marksmanship department.

I prefer detachable magazines. I've been using them for about three decades and aparently I can't lose them even when carrying half a dozen at a time for days on end.

yea, but don't you feel stupid when you go for your wallet or your keys and find a mag in there instead- the keys or wallet are in a bowl at home- you left the house "properly loaded" or so you THOUGHT- THE "PANTS WEIGHT" was right

I will always prefer a DM, that said my stand gun has a hinged floorplate & as a stand gun I get along just fine with it. Then again a lot of older bolt guns weren't available in DMs or I would have had one. I also do watches from the atv, DMs in that case make loading & unloading so much easier & faster, especially with 1/2 frozen fingers! Guess I've been fortunate that in 40 yrs I've never lost a mag...or clip:evil:
