I have a Cooey 600 with a Blonde stock, not sure if its birch or pine, what should i do to make it darker, i know i will have to strip the stock first, but uncertain about using a stain to darken it followed up with either BLO or Tung Oil
Your stock is likely birch wood. You will definately need to strip the old finish of with some sort of paint stripper. I used an antique furniture stripper. Once all the old finish is off, you'll want to iron or steam out any deep marks or gouges. Then you would sand it until the wood is ready to be refinished. Staining is pretty simple....choose your preferred colour, apply it to the prepared wood with a brush or sponge, wait about a minute, then wipe off with a clean rag. Once it dries, if you wish to darken it a bit further, re-apply and wipe off again.
Once the staining is complete, I like to use Tru-oil to finish. Lots of light coats with gentle wet sanding in between coats. I put on at least 5 coats of True-oil. I find the more coats, the better the finish. After my last coat of Tru-oil has dried, I remove the glossy finish with steel wool or a wet scotchbrite pad and then complete the job by polishing the finish with wax.
