its been a long hustle, about 7 afternoon hunts and a handful of morning stalks produced deer most occaisons but unable to either set up for a shot or the animal wouldnt stop...
Well yesterday with the forecast for rain this arvo, i loaded my hilux and headed up to the closest hills in hope of finding a wall hanger!

I was targetting a Sambar Hind (doe) an although there is a few of them in this unburnt mountain range they are not as populated as nearby Forest, so it takes a bit to get onto them.

many locations later i had my oppertunity yesterday arvo quite early on.......

A Hind and Calf fed out from Right to Left across an open Face., i watched for a while until she cleared some timber and give me an oppertunity from 300 meters.

i pulled the shot / flinched as i had only a T shirt and not two layers of polar fleece for padding :) :D and i was spewing about it!

Thanksfully she Ran off into some tall timber- i lost her for half an hour an picked her back up near the shot sight! as she had calmed down by now , she began to bravely feed out into the open again.

This time I was determined to place a shot on her!

I dialled 3.5 moa as per my "inch drop testing" and shot confirmation this week, lined up and squeezed off a shot

She took off an i figured, yeah sweet...missed again :(

waited a few minutes as she was in some brush at last sight... kept scanning the area with binos and next minute, down the steep open face came rolling a big brown ball with flashes of orange rump tumbling down down down....

You Beauty!!!

I cut her back legs off and Caped out her Body up to her skull and cut the spine and loaded her into my back pack!

Beauty but I am curious, you only took the back legs?

Yes bro. no law or regs around harvest here , ill shoot one down the bottom of the hill on a farmers place for full body utilisation.

bare in mind the Rules and Regs are dramatically different from CAN to AU. yours are native and ours are seen as pests to a major degree and it stinks. i know.

in saying that i wanted to grab the Back straps, an hindsight, should of , i just had alot of work cut out for me, ferrying leg an bag 50m at a time in that steep ####. :)
all good.
Come hunt one.

edit* lucky to take the legs lol, just want her cape for the wall!
Nearby the National Parks an Wild Life Services just Flew over the Burnt Land an Culled (Shot from air and left to Rot) across the Whole State...... its a rough time for a Sambar deer at the moment (and brumbys) we wont ever know the official Take. but theres 50,000 disgruntled license holders wo hpay fees to hunt these places.

Nice job! Love seeing the pics and hearing the story...always amazed at how different the vegetation is in different regions...those fine grass “sprays” look like just the kind of thing my missus would love (and pay dearly for) for her garden!

You're not wrong there mate!
Those are called "black boys" OR Kangaroo Tails! , Native to the Area. anddd, the ones in the shops are about $2500aud ha ha! highly illegal to take from the bush if caught big penalty. i love them!

No worries at all and Glad you enjoy the scenery and landscapes! as much as i do :) and i love showing you guys the Sambar deer we have here!

Seeing as you Gjys like the Landscape here, Here is a landscape sorta shot of the Area i was glassing :)

i can see this face from my house, across the big wide valley, over the 'town' and on the other side at the lone mountain range :)

Another FACT- 10 years ago , on the same Ridge but south of me 500m, is where I was glassing for Fallow Deer during the Rut and glassed an exceptional Sambar Stag contouring from afar, below me. i was 10 yrs younger and very green but decided that i would just Bee line down toward him...
We met at 40 meters, i had a 270 winchester..
He is proudly above my Parents loungeroom, measures 31.5 x31 x 25w , well, This Hind, being from the Same area, is going to be the
"pidgeon Pair" of my Trophy room :)

Regs or no regs that is sad. Do you not have people around who are less fortunate and could use the meat? Just to leave it in the bush like that and going to waste is what destroys the view of hunters around the world :(

the dingos will have a nice meal.

This coming month alll National Park, State forest bordering Farmland , will be Aerial 1080 dropped by the Govt "Parks Victoria" .. once now and a month later follow up for any survivors...... its a sad time to be an australin animal at present.

1080 bait is target for the "Wild Dogs" and which recently the Govt reclassified the Alpine Dingo as just a "feral dog" so as these Poisons events in the National Park can go on without harm to the previouly "PROTECTED" Alpine Dingo...

fn sucks

whole lot of it does

Thought you aussie were tough as nails, that quarter looks to be about 40 lbs, da wife Carrie's 120lb quarters of moose and dont bat an eye.

Lol

So if you go goose hunting here in canada, you make sure to use every ounce of meat on the bird? Most only take the breasts and ditch the rest.

The local animals get to finish the carcass anyways so it isnt a waste. Especially if they are considered pests.
