Does anyone know the exact length of dowel that used to be in this type of Mossberg 500? I want to take the gun out hunting but I need to put a dowel in the mag tube so I can only have two rounds in the gun.

Also once I get the dowel, how do I put it in? Just take of the mag tube cap carefully and slide the dowel in or....?

I don't know if this helps but the dowel on my Maverick 88 is exactly 9 inches. The Maverick is similarto the 500 but your mag tube looks longer. The dowel has a couple of rubber O-rings on it so it doesn't rattle as much in the tube.

i would measure the mag tube and measure 2 3" shells and subtract and that should give you the desired length for the dowl and I am pretty sure it should just drop in the end where the barrel nut is, but check diameter as it will likely be 1/4 inch or smaller

easy to figure the length out ......stuff it full of shells untill no more will go in.......take them out and line them up end to end..... remove two from the line and measure whats left.....take this measurement less 1.75 inches (assuming 2.75 inch shells were used) and cut your dowel to the resulting # .....this will allow two 3 inch shells to be in the mag (2.75 as well) with a little free play.......to insert remove mag cap an spring cap from muzzle end of spring and drop dowel into mag ....reassemble

I should have thought of that.....

I would of just done trial and error, it would probably be faster than measuring, start really long, take off pieces until your at the desired length
