BLR 81 scope and mounts?

This seems to be an on going battle with myself. I've take one deer with the BLR 81 2 years ago and then my scope broke and after it broke I took it off and used iron sights. I like the iron sights, but don't feel confident to make a shot at a moose or deer open sights beyond 150 yards.

Last year I finally replaced my scope last year with a bushnell trophy XLT, basically an updated version from what i had. After mounting the scope I found myself doing a bob and weave to get a good sight picture and no scope shadow. Bottom line is the comb is too short and I can't get a good cheek weld. Or my rings are too high. The blr 81 was my first rifle and one of the first and few I've fired with a scope.

The questions I have is it possible to have a scope on a BLR 81 and still have a good cheek weld to make those accurate shots? If so what kind and size of rings and base are you using? I believe mine were weaver #25s and rings were standard weaver scope medium rings.

What is your magnification? It could be eye relief (scope too close or you are creeping up on it)problem. How much clearance between the objective bell and the barrel? If you have a lot of clearance you may get away with lower rings.

I use a one piece Leupold steel base. Front rings are turn in style & rear are windage screws on the two sides holding the rings in. I use a Leupold VX III 1.5-5x20 and find it's a great set up.

3x9 x40. I attach my scope and adjust eye relief in the highest power and the check the lowest. I`m very particulate about setting up my scope. As for bell to barrel. I can get closer only by removing the rear sight. One option I`ve thought of is getting a new scope in a smaller ocular size like a 32mm and lower rings.

Most of all I`m curious about what other people have used and have success with. This was my grandfather`s rifle. He took 3 moose that I can remember with this rifle. He may have had success, but the gun was setup for him. Not for myself. I want to figure something out that might work for me.

My BLR .308 was topped with a Leupold VX II 3 x 9 x 40mm; medium rings for years.
I shot it a lot at paper at the range and taken my quota of big game also having fun with it shooting coyotes.

I never had a problem. One thing I have learned over the years is; the cheaper the scope the more problematic your shooting can be. This also includes the warranty work as well.

In my earlier years I could not afford the higher quality scopes and the old Bushnell Banner had to do. I must have gotten one not made on a Monday or a Friday as it worked fine.

You have some good advice coming your way from the forum.
Good luck.

I like the weaver 2 peice bases and then for rings I run

Matte= Leupold PRW low
Gloss=Leupold QRW low

Have Vx 3 1.5-5 and Vx3 2.5-8x36 scopes.

It's easy to have too high of rings on these rifles.

BLRs are notorious for having a low comb which works out perfect for the iron sights but not so much for a scope.

I'd use a straight tube scope and the lowest mounts possible.

I have the Browning Intergrated Scope Mounts made by Talley. I went with the intermediate height. Scope is a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40. This setup made my BLR a more natural shooter when it came to shouldering and target acquisition. Before that I had a set of Weaver See-Thru mounts that were really too high and made the gun feel awkward when sighting. I got the Talley mounts from WSS for $60.

I installed weaver bases and the lowest rings available with a 1.25-4x20 Bushnell 4200 (30mm tube - illuminated dot reticle) and find this to be the optimum scoping configuration for my BLR. Rear sight was not an issue in this set-up.
