BLR for bear

Magazine full, but chamber empty. Sounds reasonable. I was just wondering when you said keep it loaded.

But not a detach mag, because it could get ejected during the crash and you have to search in the snow for it. I suppose you wouldn't want a hinged floor plate either then, since it could get popped open just as easily as a detach mag could get ejected.

So you want a light and compact rifle that would be bomb proof and reliable - no take downs- that would be chambered in a cartridge worthy of bear defence, but must also have a blind magazine, or perhaps a tube magazine.

I'm thinking a guide gun in 45-70.

If you decide on the 45-70, throw a box of 410 bore 3" #7 1/2 in as the 45-70 shoots them just fine too. Will keep you in grouse and bunnies for days.

Hey, quick question again: Using the 410 shells in the 45-70, wouldn't that mess up the rifling in the gun? I recognize that it's a good double- usage during a survival situation, and I think it's a pretty good idea, but it's not something you'd want to do on a regular basis, correct?

Why would it have any negative effect on the rifling, lead shot in a plastic shot cup riding down a steel or stainless steel barrel? If you were using carbide shot maybe!
I have shot many boxes of it down my original 86 and 2 different marlins I've had without any problems, not even extraction. I do seem to remember having to remove the odd one from my old 86 with my pocket knife, actually. But certainly nothing that was in any way harmful to the rifle.

I really like blr's, but the sights suck. Change em! All my open sighted blr's have always worn ashley xs ghost sites, and always will!!!! I'd go with the .358, if it's it's easy to get ammo where you live. If not, the .308

Dave.
