How difficult for an approved smith to re barrel a .308 to a .338? And is this recommended? I would like to own a .338 Fed in a lever action but sadly none of the major rifle manufacturers currently produce one.

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers.

It is a very doable project. A Browning, Savage, Winchester 88, could all be rebarreled.
A Marlin would not work, action too short, but if you want to wildcat the new .308 Marlin, then that could be done too, but is more work to do a Marlin, and I don't think there is suitable .338 bullets that would work in tubular magazine.

A BLR is easier to rebarrel than many other centrefire rifles. There should be no problems with this conversion, probably easier than doing either a Savage or a Winchester.

This sounds like and interesting conversion. Plus I like the BLR. Does anyone know if this could be done to a Savage 99 aswell. Or is the BLR the best bet?

I'm sure a Savage with rotary magazine in .308 could be converted without action problems. A 99C would also be a candidate. But a Savage rebarrel is more complicated than a BLR. Barrel shank is more complex, forend is fastened to the barrel, etc.

I think I much prefer the BLR. I have a possible deal on a BLR .308 and think that that's the route I will take. I wasn't aware that the 338Federal wasn't available in a lever and I don't imagine it will show up any time soon.

Cheers

"...How difficult for an approved smith to re-barrel a .308 to a .338?..." Find a barrel. You're looking at a very expensive, custom made, barrel for any lever action. Otherwise, it's just a necked up .308 that really won't do anything a .308 won't do.

Kinda like the .358, the 7-08, and the .260??

Wouldn't you need to use a long action BLR (30-06..etc)?
Why would you need a long action???????? .338 is short like a .308

SEE :)

But whats it matter that it wont do anything the 308 wont do. We could scrap hundreds of unneeded calibers if everyone cared about that. Personally I like variety.
