BLR shooting distance?

For most of us, the 308Win can kill farther than we can shoot (and hit anything) under hunting conditions.

You might well be, but the only way to really know for sure is to shoot across the extended ranges you intend to shoot game at. This might simply reinforce what you expect, which is a good thing, or you could be in for a big surprise. Sometimes down range performance is a head scratcher, so it's best to shoot and confirm.
Was this 3 shot group fired from a field position?
The issue is not the inherent accuracy of the rifle. What is important is how well you can shoot in the field.
The standard of being able to consistently hit a dinner plate under field conditions is a sound one.
At what distance can you do this? There is the answer to your question.
A shooting buddy has a BLR that will shoot sub MOA when he can come to grips with that horrendous trigger. Another friend was lucky to get 4" out of his. And that was after 2 years of playing with handloads. Since both of them just viewed it as a bush gun it didn't make a lot of difference either way. Yours could be just about anything.

You should actually try it at the distance you think will be your max, the rifle is not the limiting factor, we are.

I took a whitetail deer at about 400 yards with a BLR 81 in .308 Win, using handloads with 180 grain Winchester Silver Tips bullets. I had all the time in the world, I got down on my belly in the prone position, the deer had no idea I was there, and my first shot hit under the deer. On my second shot, shooting a foot high over its back, the deer dropped in its tracks.
I had never shot my rifle at 400 yards, and frankly had no intention of doing so until this shot presented itself during a "cull" at Long Point, Ontario. I would absolutely NOT use my BLR (which has shot a pile of deer) beyond about 200 yards. I now load 180 grain Nosler Partitions, which give me excellent accuracy off the bench, but a BLR just is not a bench rest rifle.
All of the folks who say "can you hit a pie plate at distance "X" have got it absolutely right. Not just for BLRs either!
