I have decided to get myself a std barrel profile LH bolt for smacking coyotes and for general carrying around.

I was looking at the Tikka T3 lite stainless in 223. I load for the 223 now and have an AR, so that is the cartridge I am leaning towards. I was about to buy one when I saw the Prophet River has the Ruger Hawkeye LH in blued and wood in 223. The Ruger is $80 more, but then I do not need to worry about rings and bases, so it all works out. I owned a Ruger 77 MKII in 30-06 that was quite accurate, and I have used the Tikkas and so were they; I think it is a wash in that regards.

I was brought up with wood and blued guns and I love the looks of them. I also know for a pounding around rifle, the stainless and synthetic is better, especially with the detachable magazine.

Any opinion would be appreciated on which one to lean towards. Thanks in advance for any help. I would love a Ruger LH in stainless and laminate, but I do not think they make them anymore in 223.

I own a mix of wood, blue, laminate, stainless, synthetic rifles and they all have their place.....

My .223 is a Ruger Scout, but my goto rifle for yotes and wolves is a Ruger Compact in .243..... So you can see where my brand allegiance is.....

I prefer stainless synthetic or grey laminate on predator guns.... I do most of my predator hunting in the winter and I feel they work better in a winter camo scheme.....

wood is nice but my blue rifles with wood stocks don't get used much there my fair weather rifles
if you hunt a lot go with SS if you walk a lot wen hunting then light is the most important
we got along just fine for yeas just using blue rifles and wood stocks theirs more cleaning and oiling but wen your young that's part of the fun

I find wood stocks warmer to hold in the cold. But when you bring the cold rifle in the house it sweats for a while, so stainless/synthetic it better then. I solved the problem by owning both, it is an addiction. WK

mate if the Cpoyote is any as cunning as a Fox or Dingo dog then I would be making sure I was as stealthed out as I could be, meaning Black or Camo minimizing shiney surfaces.

good luck with it

Your question "Blued and wood or stainless and synthetic for coyote" my answer would be yes.
I don't think the coyotes like either.

Whatever you enjoy and the rifle that you can shoot well is the one to choose.

I just went through this same problem a little while ago. What I found was a lot of dubious information. Some people say stainless shoots better because it doesn't warp as much during heat treating or because it is easier to machine. Some people say blued lasts longer due to the steel being harder or more wear resistant. Some people say that stainless barrels wear out all at once and blued steel barrels wear out gradually. Some said that blued will rust if you look at it wrong and some said it's unheard of for it to rust even if you were to whipe it down with salt water every night. I couldn't find much to back up any of those claims. I did find out that almost all aftermarket target and custom barrels are stainless so it must be pretty good. I also know that blued steel firearms have worked great for well over a hundred years and some of them are still working fine. I say pick whichever you like the look of more because you can't go wrong either way. You are going to clean and oil your rifle no matter what finish it has so you will probably never notice a difference for rust and I doubt anybody who isn't a benchrest shooter will notice an accuracy difference. Take my advise for what it's worth. This is only what I found going through forums like you are doing now and if you find something that proves you should get one over the other without a shadow of a doubt tell us here because I want to know for my next purchase. :)

Ther is a number of coating that will protect your rifle even stainless steel will rust
It's more important to pick the rifle you like that will work for your style of hunting
To be honest my main hunting rifles are all stainless and I have yet to have a protective coating put on them and the blue steel rifle are just to pretty to mess up the Finnish

I used to shoot stainless exclusively due to the Internet hype surrounding its superiority, further supported by a cheap Remington 870 Express I owned that rusted when the humidity changed! I personally dispise the look of stainless... it scratches easily, and in one case (a Ruger) it also rusted. I have since cleared my locker of stainless, except for one custom with a nitron blackened stainless barrel. All my quality blued rifles (antique, old, and modern) get the same very basic maintenance as my stainless rifles did and they all look like new or in the case of antiques, preserved... and they look and feel much better (IMHO) than stainless. As for throat life, I can tell you from experience that my non-stainless rifles have ALL held up better.

Just as an aside, I prefer the look of colour case hardening, rust bluing and real wood ;)
