Blued barrel for S&W 586- Help!

Gentlemen,

Although I post (very) infrequently I have enjoyed the knowledge folks here for some time. I am in need of assistance in locating a blued 6" barrel for an 80's era S&W 586. The barrel is to assist an acquaintance who was given the revolver by a dieing friend. However with the 4" barrel currently on it, he is not able to posses it. I'm hoping to locate a blued 6" barrel for it so it can remain in his hands.

I have tried a number of sources without success, and my emails to S&W have gone unanswered. If there is anyone here that might be able to assist in tracking one down for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Check with the S&W warranty centers in Canada.
They're M.D. Charlton and Wortner's.

If they don't have it they can get it, and then, they can fix it right.
 
Don't know where you are but a local shop that brings in parts may be willing and able to add the barrel to their order and on their import licenses.
 
Well, my little quest continues. I've received emails back from numerous gunsmiths across the country with no luck. Even S&W head office says they have nothing anymore for the 586. It's either a testament to the durability of their firearms or brutal parts support on their part. Either way, it's frustrating.

I have a few lines in the water yet (James at TSE and James at MD CHARLTON), I suppose we'll have to see if anything pans out.

That's a good thought, however the only place so far that I've been able to locate a barrel is through Midway. I'm waiting to hear back from them on a Canadian supplier that deals with them.
 
Your simplist solution would be to bore the present barrel out and put in a 107MM long barrel liner with a 3MM cap at muzzle. I have done a number of these conversions in .22 and .38 with no problem on changing the classification from prohibited to restricted.
 
Bob, I've always been told The CFO will not except this type of conversion, but you seem to have done it and got them reclassified. What’s the trick, are you welding the barrel extension on?
 
Thanks to everyone for their ideas and help. I was able to find a gunsmith in Louisiana that sells bull-barrels for the 586 but badboybeeson has come through with a barrel for me. As it turns out, we're in the same city so all's well that ends well.

Regarding reclassing the berral, it can be done,but you are
much better to pick up that barrel from BBB.
to add an extention to the end- which looks like crap,
you have to install full length liner and does not work out
that well in one gun I know of.
If you don't buy that barrel from him, I will ( hint- hint)
 
Sorry to drag up my old thread, but I thought it wise to add on rather than start a new one.

I've recently received the barrel from BBB (thanks Simon!). I'm now looking for a gunsmith the Kingston/Belleville area to do the swap. I'd be willing to give it a shot, but I can't seem to find instructions online and I hear the 586/686 barrels can be tricky to change over. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks again for all your help everyone.

If you don't find anyone in your area , you could contact Gunnar at
Armco ( see above banners) .
BTW I got that barrel from Gord and very nice.
All kinds of stuff comes out around here.

Thanks for the suggestion. If nothing turns up local I suspect I'll end up shipping it to Gunnar or back to S&W for the work. The barrel has a small amount of pitting and rust on the outside which will need some attention. Fortunately I see Gunnar is now working with someone who can do bluing.
