I've narrowed my choice down to a clip model semiautomatic marlin #795[I have no ambition to modify it,in which case I might have gone with the ruger]but now am wondering if the stainless model is worth the extra $70 [$219 vs $149]of course,I need another 22 like a hole in the head-and my BRNO makes it tough to justify ''needing'' another one.

this theme has been beaten to death on a few occasions. Bottom line - if you are out doing some field work stainless will be much better choice. Especially if you are somehwre in coastal rainforest, things are soggy all day here this time of the year. For big bore rifles I would consider heat dissipation if you are planning to shoot multiple shots - black radiates heat much more rapidly. For 22lr it is not really a concern.

blued vs stainless

i carry a marlin model 795 blued every time i go 4 wheelin with my daughter along with a 410 for partridge.it is bungee corded to my front rack and as long as i keep it oiled there is no problem.for the price of the marlin i dont worry too much.right now it is the best value for the money (imho)

blue looks much better IMO - both when new and especially on an older firearm that is aged/worn.

however im really starting to appreciate the relative worry-free durability of stainless. for a nice classy gun you cant beat the look of blued.
but for something thats going to see rough use, or poor weather, do yourself a favor and spend the extra $50-100 on a stainless.

in terms of an unfluted, unfinned, simple round barrel this advantage would be so minimal as to hardly make any measurable difference.
for a rifle that is going to go through thousands of rounds a stainless barrel will result in slightly longer barrel life and less throat erosion. of course unless you are shooting thousands of rounds through your gun you are unlikely to ever notice this either.

its really all about personal preference based on looks and maintenance.
