Boar Hunting in Alberta

no! There is talk of loose pigs but none saying "come here" There are lots of locals looking to shoot, no luck. There were some N of Wetaskiwin a few years ago (maybe 10) they lasted 2 months.

I wanna try this too. I was thinking of calling a Conservation Officer. They might be able to point in the right direction. I'm sure they would be the first agency called by a pissed off landowner.

The whole wild pig pheneomenom is real hush hush. The few people that do know where some are real tight lipped. Your best bet would be to do alot of searching around Forums to find out "rumors" of where people have heard of where the pigs are, then call the local office to see if anyone has complained of their crops being rooted up and then go from there. I wouldn't keep my hopes up of someone just telling you where they are, alot work involved with hunting these critters.

To add to this, the counties in Alberta that subscribed to the provincially funded bounty program, some actually hired predator control officers, just for this single problem.
They even quietly passed a law/regulation saying that farmers/rural landowners could not stop these hired county officers from entering thier land, for access just to kill these escaped wild boar.
Apparently it was said for each destroyed wild boar, they received twice the public bounty.
So that's 100 dollars each........

This was thirdhand information from a rural store employees, in central Alberta.

IF your in Edmonton take highway 2 south until you see the sign...Welcome to Texas. In all honesty all the time over the last year i have driven looking for hogs i would have had better luck driving south.

I've already called SRD. They didn't give me any info.
Lot's of articles in news papers if you google "Alberta Wild Boars". Some mention counties in Northern Alberta some in the central part. That's about all I know.

i've read on another forum that there are some wild boars in the BC interior near Dawson Creek and just across the border in Alberta. i'm not sure what the rules are about promoting other forums on this site so i won't post the name. if you want to know the source just pm me. i've been wanting to go bag one too :D

They say between Sundre and Dickson along the Red there were supposed to be some, had been confirmed a few times by different people. Downtown Edm, in the park, but they are reserved for Edm Swat team, and up around Fairview up on the Peace, that one I've never heard confirmed by locals.

hog wild

Try looking up 'Hog Wild'. They are out near Whitecourt/Mayerthorpe somewhere. Their website even says they offer bowhunting packages, but maybe they allow rifle hunting?!? That is if you are into canned hunts.

Rumour has it that there are some escapees in that area as well. Also heard that around Niton Junction has some ferrel pigs. Dunno the accuracy on these reports but that is your best bet.

There are pigs up at Mayerthorpe, I can't shoot there it is the ex-wifes boyfriends dads place (enough said lol) in saying that last summer it was so bad my daughter was running from them on his farm. Check out county of Lac t. Anne web site tells about bounty if you have permission letter from the land owner and also there is a (guided hunt?) for them out there aswell

The Fairview area ones everyone kept talking about are all shot out. They were just a bit north of Worsley but the story kept going around about the Fairview area. The one's around Nampa and Deadwood are also all gone.

I saw one the other night in my pasture. He was black as the ace of spades. He hightailed it into a bush before we could get within 100 yards. I had my bl-22 with me, but I didn't bother trying, not enough power to take him humanely.

I bought a trail cam yesterday and am going to put it out with a pail of oats.

Do you guys think a .308 is good for this job? I bet he could weigh as much as 400 lb.

The .308 should be just dandy. But be forewarned, thier heart is more forward and lower in the chest area. Not quite like a whitetail deer. So be careful of shot placement friend.

That rumor used to be true,I killed a couple myself just out of Niton, and a landowner friend killed a dozen or so,but that was many years ago. These were boars that escaped from a hunt farm bordering my friends land.I haven't seen a wild boar in the area in close to ten years.

What seems Weird or What,, is why in the hell did the Alberta govmt go through all the hype, The CBC got on board, they spent tax dollars on the campaign to bring the info to the public ETC ETC.. And it's just seems like this is not an issue. ie. There really is no wild boar problem, so why did the govmt do it?

SOP for any Gov't organization. Someone sticks a camera in front of them and asks "What are you doing about...?" and policy gets made on the fly.

It's about on par with putting a bounty on the Sasquatch, IMO. A valueless effort in reaction to problem that isn't really a problem. cheap positive publicity, though. After all, there they are on the news, "doing" something about it, that's really gonna cost them less than the next office coffee run.

Kinda funny to watch the guys get all excited and plan their hunts, about on par with listening in on a couple dopers talking 'what-if' in relation to the dream score... Pretty much just talk.

There are a few pigs loose out there. A few Bison, too. And some cattle. Lots of horses. Probably one or two elk that shouldn't have got away. But it's not epidemic by any means.

Hearing that there is someone offering guided hunts, reminds me of the saying that says "If you are not part of the solution, there may be profit in maintaining the problem!"

Remember always the mantra of politicians everywhere.

Must. Be . Seen. To. Be. Doing. Something! Which is why they keep making new laws that cover ground already covered by laws already in place. It's what they do.

Cheers

I contacted AB conservation office. They gave me a list of counties and MD's that had "registered" a problem. Contacting these offices was disappointing. Most didn't even know what I was talking about let alone have a problem.
