Question came up in the duck blind today. Can you have an unloaded shotgun on a boat with out a case ?
Or does it need to be cased while in transport on the boat
Ontario btw and during legal hunting time I should add
It doesn’t need to be in a case whether it’s a car, boat, or plane. Or locked. Just has to be unloaded.

Sometimes. Sometimes not.
Can't wait until someone actually quotes legislation.
this is in the ontario hunting regs:
If you are in
an area usually inhabited by wildlife during
the period from half an hour after sunset to
half an hour before sunrise (night) you must unload
and encase any firearms in your possession.
To be considered encased, firearms must be
enclosed on all six sides.

When (in Ontario, during the day) is it “sometimes” required to have the gun encased during transport?
so it is federal, but what local or provincial regulations?
Ontario regs also state this ....
" A loaded firearm may be carried in, and discharged from, a canoe or boat that is being paddled, with no motor attached."
Something new here in Quebec now your crossbow must be unloaded/uncocked when being transported on any motorized vehicle just like a fire arm . I don't know about other provinces but evidently it's a new reg this fall for this province.

Ontario, during daylight hours, does not need to be encased in boat.
Cannot shoot migratory birds from a boat under motor power, engine must be turned off and forward momentum stopped.
There is usually an "unwritten" exception if trying to kill a wounded bird.
You need a license for a crossbow? Good luck informing crossbowmen of the regs without a course.
