Bob Picairn, RIP

Bob is a legend. He gave so much to the sport, the BRCA, and the DCRA (that’s where we felt his input).

Fair winds, Bob!!

Your legacy is with us now!!

Cheers, Barney

We have had much correspondence with Bob, with the 223 Remington for long range being the latest and most useful to us and the many who are now following his lead. He had many reamers made to different specifications using Lapua brass, VihtaVuori powder and mostly Berger 85.5s, in his never ending search for THE combination.
He won the agg at Bisley, which is the holy grail for TR, served on many teams to Bisley and won many championships over the years. Born in PEI, he was an Air Canada pilot after serving in the RAF and shot many thousands of rounds yearly.

Great loss to the shooting community and to his many friends.

He was a member at my club in Surrey, BC. We had a special time set up for him, his son, and a few others to shoot.

RIP, Bob.

Met Bob and his wife in Chilliwack, they ran the service rifle matches out at the Vokes range. I made it out there more than a few times. Always good matches.

He will be missed.

The news was a big surprise to me when I heard it from another local competitor. He was a great mentor to many and to myself even though we were in different shooting disciplines. I count myself blessed and fortunate when he called me one of his students at a match. He was a great coach and a great competitor into his late 70s and 80s, shooting some of the best scores for a TR competitor in WA state. I always look forward to meeting and talking with him at all the matches I attended, here in BC and in Washington. I was fortunate enough to have spent some time with him at a match at Rattlesnake, interviewed him and even had a nice evening with him and his wife over a beer. His stories were endless and always filled with joy, laughter, insight and wisdom, and he was probably one of the best wind readers in the sport and in Canada. He will always be a part of my memories and my matches and I will remember him as a mentor and a friend I will miss him. My prayers and deepest condolences to Kay, Don and the family. I'm certain he's in a place of peace, and still shooting those heavenly Vs.

That is sad news indeed. There aren't many of that generation left and we are diminished with each passing.

From DCRA

We are incredibly saddened to share the passing of Canadian shooting icon and DCRA Life Governor Robert “Bob” A. Pitcairn.

Bob’s illustrious shooting career spanned 7 decades and saw him compete and win against the best on the provincial, national, and international stages. Bob qualified for the Canadian Bisley Team over 40 times and won the Grand Aggregate at the Imperial Meeting in 1965. A multiple time Canadian Target Rifle Champion, Bob also captained both the Canadian Palma and Canadian Bisley teams and was a past President of the BCRA. Bob is an inductee of the DCRA, PEI, and Canadian Armed Forces Sports Hall of Fame and has been listed in the BCRA Scroll of Marksmen on multiple occasions. In recent years, Bob became well known internationally as the oldest athlete to ever compete in the Commonwealth Games when he represented Canada in Fullbore in 2018.

Bob was not only a tremendously talented and dedicated shooter, but he also gave generously of his time to support marksmanship, ranging from his local cadet corps to mentoring his fellow TR competitors. He was a tremendous supporter of the BCRA U25 program and worked tirelessly to help grow and develop new shooters through the BCRA and Mission Rod & Gun Club.

We’ll miss all of his amazing stories and that smile that would light up the room. Bob was a fierce competitor, a loyal friend, and a true gentleman. Our thoughts are with his family and friends around the world.

We are greatly diminished.
