PM to me with your email address - I might be able to help - I have a similar - got me going about those - I do have the book by Ron Bester, as well as the three volumes by David C. George - probably about the best references to ID the thing. Will take multiple pictures of really "silly" details, but is worth to find out what you have, I think ...

Just FYI - there were two "Boer Republics" - "OVS" - Orange Vrei Stat - Orange Free State; and ZAR - Zud Africa Republik - South Africa Republic

From the references, is a bit odd to have a straight handle bolt on a long rifle - at least a couple reasons why that might be an issue. Also, all the references explain British, Canadian and Australian handling of captured arms from Boers - will be a bit unexpected to have a bolt with a matching number to the receiver. We can discuss.

For reasons explained in references, is not to be expected that the bolt matches to receiver - actually needs a "story" to explain if it does match - most found in the world do not - is an "angel's match making service" on milsurp site where the people - Dave George and partner in South Africa - have spent life time trying to match up a rifle from somewhere (say Canada) with its matching bolt from somewhere else (say Australia) - is all a function of how Britain, Canada and Australia handled captured Boer arms and promptly were sold off to buyers that appeared, there, at the scene - USA and others...

David George is a great guy. He actually responded my email and looked at mine! Send him an email =)

Does your Mauser have any carvings? I managed to track down my guy from the POW records.

Actually, maybe too "fantastic" condition, for a rifle made circa 1896 ...

I've had several 93-95 Mausers made in that time looking that good but none of them were sold or issued to the Boers.

They rode them hard.

I've also owned several Boer rifles with OVS stamps. Some were private sales, with two piece stocks, where the fore end was cut off by the land owner, so he could use it as a hunting rifle and put it back together for military service.

I still have one of the stocks, with some lovely carving on the side. It's all there but someone attempted to repair some damage and never finished. It came out of a wood pile. Just didn't want to see it burned up.

It's ok if the bolt is mismatched. The M-1893 rifles made by Ludwig Loewe for the ZAR had both the A and B prefix. The "first" 20,000 rifles were delivered in 1896 to Z.A.R.
The serial # ranged A1-A10000 and B1-B10000. If it has the Chilean crest or any indication there was one (A top shot of the action would be great) it was a ZAR rifle
that could not be delivered. They were returned back to Germany and resold.

Hows the bore?

P
