Saw this one in the EE. Cool group but I suspect that there are some crossed wires on this story and the price is too rich for my blood.

I did try and locate the alleged Boer War soldier but could not find an entry for him on the medals register (1885) or Boer War.

Yeah, I saw that. No imperial soldier used a Snider in either Boer war. Martinis were issue in the first and Lee metfords in the second. The Boers used mausers in both. Some Snider's may have been present in the first war amoungst auxiliaries but none would be DC marked. For sure no one was given a rifle and ammo on discharge, HM Armed Forces never worked that way, paperwork would drive a QM crazy. Cute story though.

In the first Boer war the most popular arm among the Boers was the Westley Richards capping breechloader followed by Westley Richards improved Martinis, Martini Henrys and a wide assortment of other arms. There were enough Sniders in Boer hands that the Boer Govt magazines were stocking Snider ammo as late as 1896.
The Canadians in South Africa for BW2 were armed with Magazine Lee Enfields MkI. When the contingent returned to Canada the Cdn Govt made a gift to all soldiers who wanted it of their uniform, accoutrements and rifles.

BTW, for some reason I couldn't access the link - got this instead.....
